As for me, I started a long time ago as a rope fetishist, who then got curious as to how to get more of it into the bedroom.
After a lot of knotwork I found shibari to be a lot more sensual and flowy, and thoroughly fell in love and spent inordinate amounts of time and money to learn it.
Meanwhile, I lost my rope fetish, but seem to have plenty of excuses to use ropes anyway ;)

The GF now wife really seems to like it quite a bit. I’m happy to oblige :) She got me some books for my Bday this year, but I’m still very much a beginner. She does want to do some suspensions SOMEDAY but we have a LOT of learning to do first.

If you get impatient, may I suggest looking into weekend intensive classes? A couple of those and some practice may let you suspend safely in months (depending on your teachers and dedication to practice ofc).
