My watch started vibrating and I noticed this spacy animation. It disappeared after about 15-20 seconds. This happened while sitting on the couch doing nothing. My iPhone was about a meter away. My SO sitting next to me, also about a meter away.

It's just the watch self actualizing. Don't panic. Just stay on friendly terms with it.

I‘m always on friendly terms with it :) It’s the best device Apple ever invented.

It's the airdrop a contact feature. Hold another, phone or even yours, up to it and it will trigger it.

Wow, that is a strange UI choice for that feature. Nebulous - both figuratively and literally.

Actually it restored its self after a few seconds. No data loss of similar.
