How is this one compared to the original? Even more distortion?

@Harald Eilertsen It's pretty similar, however has more bass response. I play baritone guitar, or drop C on D tunings, partly on sthg. like an electrified Martin Backpacker, so I want that whoomph to survive even in bigger distortion scenarios. Love that thing!

@*_jayrope ah, cool! The original RAT has a lot of crunch, but it kills the bass somewhat. I'm currently waiting for the Billy Sheehan Ultimate Signature Drive from EBS which I think could give me more of what I want. But I could perhaps just split the signal myself, run one branch through the RAT and the other clean, and then mix the outputs again...

@Harald Eilertsen TurboRAT has good crunch, too. Your splitting method sounds like a possibility, as long as there is no digital sound processing in the signal path in between (you could get latency problems otherwise: steady phasing due to signal buffers in the way)

@*_jayrope Tempting! I still have my old 4-track cassette recorders :) But I was thinking more about keeping the signal analog until it's sampled by the soundcard.

@Harald Eilertsen a 4-track cassette will not do it, it's much to coloured - unless you want that colour. But it starts to get interesting especially for bass and drums on a properly maintained machine, from 2-track 1/2" on.
