I did wash the floors at the old place, cleaned inside all the cupboards and got the scuffs off the walls. Oven isn't perfect but it's ok. It looks as good as it can.

Sigh. You know how there are some people whose company somehow makes you feel more alone? I feel like that's this person I hung out with this evening... I basically felt like I was her uber driver. I have never liked the fact that she's 50% of the time on the phone when hanging out with me, in the past it was because I was helping her out with stuff but now I'm kinda done. The last straw was when we were supposed to have fish and chips after the sunset and she said she'd shout me, but then later on when I asked her where she'd like to go she said actually she has cramps and she doesn't want to eat. I think I'm really ready to let this one fade away (which is sad given I don't have many other friends but oh well)
Just enjoying my own f&c at home now, gonna rewatch last week's The Pitt and then enjoy this week's.
I think she's better with her other friends but tbh... I really don't have that much in common with her other than some mutual acquaintances from uni. Her likes and personality are totally different from mine. I think I bore her too but I'm not about to be a doormat about it either. Probably better for us both to let things go.
I don't know if it's also a young person thing (one of my very few friends more than 2 yrs younger than me) but I will say I always make it a point not to be on my phone when I've specifically arranged to be with others - it really saddens me when others don't reciprocate. Maybe it's how others feel comfortable around their friends but it doesn't work for me.
I went back to Resource Rescue craft supplies today, with a focus on getting soft fabric and things that can double as packing material for my move. I did manage a decent amount of fleece, and some felt squares that should work well between plates.
I also ended up with a couple of pieces of fabric that look like the stuff they use to cover bus and train seats - it should work well to re-cover Miss Meows tower which is getting a bit tatty. The blue won't really match anything else in the house, but you can't have everything.
Edit: Miss Meow has tested the fabric and seems to approve.

I don't hate the beach but man, give me a wide open plain or mountain forest or even a treed river bank any day. Something about the gritty sand and seagulls and stuff in the sand and the endless expanse of the water just makes me feel meh.

I made it for a new year party and it was a hit! So going to impress different friends with it.
Here’s the recipe I use. I don’t bother with the cream topping for a pie I need to transport and want to make the day before eating, and it’s still very nice without it. But I’d do it for a home pie.
And there’s usually some leftover chocolate filling you can eat on its own.
Last time I did a biscoff base instead of Oreo like the recipe calls for, this time I’ll try the Oreo.
Over the hump of being drained of all energy, which is nice, but lizard brain really wants to have a drink this weekend. We'll see.
Hoping for a swim after work if it's not too nasty, since it'll be the last warm day for a while. Been 2 weeks since my last date with the paddleboard and I miss it sorely!

Sitting outside thinking about what I am gonna do when I stop smoking to keep myself occupied. Here's a list. Yo-yo, play the recorder, totem tennis, shoot flies, play battleships, keyboard. What's your suggestions?
Crochet comes to mind. Easy to carry around, takes up quite a lot of hand attention and you end up (usually!) with a usable article. Also mandarins are great to make one's mouth a lot less cigarette friendly. Also peppermints but mandarins are more effective imo.
Collage, crochet/finger knitting, gardening, experimental baking, revive macrame, try sculpture, adult colouring books, word/number/jigsaw puzzles, hook rugs or embroidery, become a meme lord, millinery, furniture restoration, darts, shoot some hoops, dancing.. ok some of those are a bit silly. But with the time you'll have and money you'll save you can just about take up leatherwork, stained glass window making or anything really.
On our morning walks we often spot other dogs taking their owners for a walk. Today I spotted a couple of moccasins (poodles?) so I held back a bit and then they all spotted each other. They didn't bark. They squeaked. Which set old Weezy off because he loves rough play with squeaky toys. I was amused they can make noise like that.
Debating if I buy these bugs or if I might be able to keep up the manual removal until I can get some attractors flowering. I saw one ladybug in the wild so that’s promising but no more since.
I figured gardening would be a cheap hobby (and with bare bones minimum it can be) but I am absolutely getting a crash course in disease/pest management with the heirlooms and also the need for feeding.
Melbcat’s meds and vet appointments are quite expensive so I feel guilty for constantly spending money on something that doesn’t have a high return. It means I’m really spending for myself. It’s just one of the few hobbies I’m able to maintain these days.
You can just give up on the pumpkins this year. Last year most of my broccoli was enjoyed by the possums. Last year I had a shit crop of tomatos. One year hook worms ate through the stalk of all my beans. Sometimes the bugs win. Failure is part of gardening. The ladybugs won't necessarily solve the problem either then you'll be out more cash.
They look strong for now and are beginning to put out female flowers which I hand pollinate. I just see one plant in particular is slammed and they’ve spread onto others now too.
Edit: A bit worried about how late I planted though.
The time I grew cabbages, they took a heap of space and water and weren't that big. Then I saw them for $3ea at the grocers. I've never grown cabbages since.
My cabbages tend to split. Never bother with onions or plain carrots, only the colourful ones. The effort to cost ratio isn't worth it. Grow what you like that's harder to get hold of.
There is enough for cat meds and care! I make sure of it. I’m just being tight, and frustrated that I’m not doing better. My circumstances keep sabotaging my goals.
I might get the eggs for a higher chance of them sticking around for long term pest control and maybe start planting the flower seeds I have in recycled containers to try and attract/keep the insects around.
I've had some luck with red cabbages - they seem to resist cabbage worms and splitting better than the green ones. I did plant them over the winter though as winter works better for broad beans & cabbages. Not summer crops imo. Brussels sprouts are good to plant now too, and are much easier to eat than a whole cabbage for just one person. Very donate-able too.
The nice thing about broad beans is that they dramatically improve the soil, AND they grow well over winter. Even if you don't like eating them, they are donate-able and the soil improvement is well worth it to prepare for next year's crops. The dry spent stalks do wunnderful things to compost too.
This is also the right time to plant leeks and onions/garlic to winter over and get a head start come Spring. The ground is still warm and you can add water as required at least for this month and next. After that it gets a bit cold. Onion thinnings are great as 'spring onions', I can't tell the difference from the bought ones, and they're much much fresher.
The pumpkin tribe has probably had its day for this summer - may not set much more fruit due to declining day length, and not enough sunshine/heat to ripen them. Imo these definitely need to be planted in spring.
I agree with Catfish about carrots - only bother with for specialty ones that you can't buy. Lotsa work, needs very good, very deep soil and even then the crop is small. The foliage is very pretty though - makes a nice border for a flower bed.
I started snow pea seedlings for the nitrogen fixing because my friend’s family eat salad and the sowing time on the pack was appropriate, how are they over autumn and winter?
Would love to plant Brussels sprouts and leeks but I’m already kind of running out of space.
Do you think there’s enough room to squeeze a pea plant in with the pumpkin and tomato in the small pots? Probably not but they’re still going and I don’t have more stakes
I’ll definitely start the next lot of pumpkins earlier next year. I probably shouldn’t do them again so soon in the same spots but maybe if I use manure and unleash the beneficial bugs then
Peas will keep growing if they get some sunshine, but may not set fruit unless they get a nice warm day when flowering. They keep doing their magic with nitrogen fixing however. Fortunately, the young foliage is edible and delicious. Worth a try pretty much wherever and whenever.
This is just my opinion, but I'd rip out the pumpkins and tomatoes (they are very unlikely to ripen now) and plant something else to keep the soil healthy. The pea/bean tribe would be excellent. Then come spring you can rip them out and plant your pumpkins again.
If you want to do onions/garlic in those pots, then manure and bugs will be very beneficial. The onion/garlic tribe take a long time to mature (comparatively), so planting now or soon makes sense for harvesting in summer next year. Leeks are quicker to mature so maybe think about planting these in late winter. Leeks do pretty well planted fairly close together, so they are space saving. I have to say that homegrown leeks are bloody marvellous, far nicer than shop bought. They tend to be thinner but so much tastier.
Um, I know it hurts, but the pumpkins are unlikely to ripen. Ditto tomatoes. It's not the temperature, its the day length. The equinox is past and the days are getting shorter so plant puts one last effort into fruiting then keels over. Maybe leave them another week just to see. They do look nice & healthy though.

I've tried open office, Google docs, libre Office... I've always seemed to have issues with compatibility when someone opens my file (saved as a DOCX by one of these programs) in Ms Word. Paragraphs will be misaligned, fonts are different, headings not recognised etc....
I've been using OnlyOffice recently. I haven't had any issues yet. Limited fonts though.
I second libre office. Depending on your needs you may want something more specialised if you're working on something really big. Scrivener isn't free but it's made for writing things like research papers and novels.
There's also a program called Joplin that's a good evernote replacement

Pet peeve: I loathe when people say "men and females", or "I need a female perspective", or "men have different X to females".
"Males and females/females and males" is fine.
"Men and women/women and men" also fine.
"Guys, gals, and non-binary pals" also fine, and it rhymes!
Females when using men in the same sentence is fucking gross and icky.

Anytime I hear a guy say females out of context I think of the ferengi.
I use female a bit when discussing anatomy, but that's the correct use imo. Eg, the female pelvis has a bigger hole in the floor for child birth, which is probably true of most mammals that have vaginal births.

I don't think it was stolen, it's just sloppy workmanship. Some guy on the assembly line bunged everything together haphazardly, and at the end had an extra | left over and just shrugged and sent it out anyway. You should probably be grateful, some further down the assembly line got a whole bunch of extra X's when he decided to whack a bunch of those leftover |'s together to get rid of them.

Crochet comes to mind. Easy to carry around, takes up quite a lot of hand attention and you end up (usually!) with a usable article. Also mandarins are great to make one's mouth a lot less cigarette friendly. Also peppermints but mandarins are more effective imo.

But with the time you'll have and money you'll save you can just about take up leatherwork, stained glass window making or anything really.

On our morning walks we often spot other dogs taking their owners for a walk. Today I spotted a couple of moccasins (poodles?) so I held back a bit and then they all spotted each other. They didn't bark. They squeaked. Which set old Weezy off because he loves rough play with squeaky toys. I was amused they can make noise like that.

Debating if I buy these bugs or if I might be able to keep up the manual removal until I can get some attractors flowering. I saw one ladybug in the wild so that’s promising but no more since.
I figured gardening would be a cheap hobby (and with bare bones minimum it can be) but I am absolutely getting a crash course in disease/pest management with the heirlooms and also the need for feeding.
Melbcat’s meds and vet appointments are quite expensive so I feel guilty for constantly spending money on something that doesn’t have a high return. It means I’m really spending for myself. It’s just one of the few hobbies I’m able to maintain these days.

You can just give up on the pumpkins this year. Last year most of my broccoli was enjoyed by the possums. Last year I had a shit crop of tomatos. One year hook worms ate through the stalk of all my beans. Sometimes the bugs win. Failure is part of gardening. The ladybugs won't necessarily solve the problem either then you'll be out more cash.

They look strong for now and are beginning to put out female flowers which I hand pollinate. I just see one plant in particular is slammed and they’ve spread onto others now too.

The time I grew cabbages, they took a heap of space and water and weren't that big. Then I saw them for $3ea at the grocers. I've never grown cabbages since.

My cabbages tend to split. Never bother with onions or plain carrots, only the colourful ones. The effort to cost ratio isn't worth it. Grow what you like that's harder to get hold of.

There is enough for cat meds and care! I make sure of it. I’m just being tight, and frustrated that I’m not doing better. My circumstances keep sabotaging my goals.
I might get the eggs for a higher chance of them sticking around for long term pest control and maybe start planting the flower seeds I have in recycled containers to try and attract/keep the insects around.

I've had some luck with red cabbages - they seem to resist cabbage worms and splitting better than the green ones. I did plant them over the winter though as winter works better for broad beans & cabbages. Not summer crops imo. Brussels sprouts are good to plant now too, and are much easier to eat than a whole cabbage for just one person. Very donate-able too.
The nice thing about broad beans is that they dramatically improve the soil, AND they grow well over winter. Even if you don't like eating them, they are donate-able and the soil improvement is well worth it to prepare for next year's crops. The dry spent stalks do wunnderful things to compost too.
This is also the right time to plant leeks and onions/garlic to winter over and get a head start come Spring. The ground is still warm and you can add water as required at least for this month and next. After that it gets a bit cold. Onion thinnings are great as 'spring onions', I can't tell the difference from the bought ones, and they're much much fresher.
The pumpkin tribe has probably had its day for this summer - may not set much more fruit due to declining day length, and not enough sunshine/heat to ripen them. Imo these definitely need to be planted in spring.
I agree with Catfish about carrots - only bother with for specialty ones that you can't buy. Lotsa work, needs very good, very deep soil and even then the crop is small. The foliage is very pretty though - makes a nice border for a flower bed.

I started snow pea seedlings for the nitrogen fixing because my friend’s family eat salad and the sowing time on the pack was appropriate, how are they over autumn and winter?
Would love to plant Brussels sprouts and leeks but I’m already kind of running out of space.
Do you think there’s enough room to squeeze a pea plant in with the pumpkin and tomato in the small pots? Probably not but they’re still going and I don’t have more stakes
I’ll definitely start the next lot of pumpkins earlier next year. I probably shouldn’t do them again so soon in the same spots but maybe if I use manure and unleash the beneficial bugs then

Peas will keep growing if they get some sunshine, but may not set fruit unless they get a nice warm day when flowering. They keep doing their magic with nitrogen fixing however. Fortunately, the young foliage is edible and delicious. Worth a try pretty much wherever and whenever.
This is just my opinion, but I'd rip out the pumpkins and tomatoes (they are very unlikely to ripen now) and plant something else to keep the soil healthy. The pea/bean tribe would be excellent. Then come spring you can rip them out and plant your pumpkins again.
If you want to do onions/garlic in those pots, then manure and bugs will be very beneficial. The onion/garlic tribe take a long time to mature (comparatively), so planting now or soon makes sense for harvesting in summer next year. Leeks are quicker to mature so maybe think about planting these in late winter. Leeks do pretty well planted fairly close together, so they are space saving. I have to say that homegrown leeks are bloody marvellous, far nicer than shop bought. They tend to be thinner but so much tastier.

Um, I know it hurts, but the pumpkins are unlikely to ripen. Ditto tomatoes. It's not the temperature, its the day length. The equinox is past and the days are getting shorter so plant puts one last effort into fruiting then keels over. Maybe leave them another week just to see. They do look nice & healthy though.

Does anyone know a good word processing shareware/freeware program? I don't want to give microsoft any more oxygen than I have to. Needs to be able to hold some fairly large files. Compatible with pdf a plus.

I've tried open office, Google docs, libre Office... I've always seemed to have issues with compatibility when someone opens my file (saved as a DOCX by one of these programs) in Ms Word. Paragraphs will be misaligned, fonts are different, headings not recognised etc.... I've been using OnlyOffice recently. I haven't had any issues yet. Limited fonts though.

I second libre office. Depending on your needs you may want something more specialised if you're working on something really big. Scrivener isn't free but it's made for writing things like research papers and novels.

I had a good idea. The garden isn’t producing much and probably won’t over winter but I also found a free doll pattern that can be copied via grid. (You can find printable ones too.) There are patterns for clothes.

Not seeing ingredients on some… Lactose is used to bind stuff into pills so maybe the gel caps might be alright. The gummies I found have ingredients and while not great they might be tolerable.

and it's just been real weird with fam , it's like I'm living with aliens. Barely a single word out of their mouths makes sense to me.
on a positive note doing all this physical work is giving me some core muscle strength and my posture has greatly improved!! Now to lose another 20 kilos and I'll be feeling great. 🙂
