Interesting to see how one faulty timing sensor/transmitter can impact:

  • the live timing of the TV broadcast
  • the DRS activation mechanism of your own car
  • the DRS activation mechanism of the following car

Because they all rely on that data

DV8@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

Yeah, that's not really acceptable, especially not for the following car. Because teams will know this and use this. By accident ofcourse...

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 13 pts · 1y

God Merc has bungled Kimi's race here. Surely they'd prefer track position instead of the extra stop at the safety car?

DV8@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1y

That overtake from Norris on Leclerc was majestic. Damn good race this!

hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 8 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Looks like Red Bull discovered a new way of bottling pit stops, faulty release light.

MoreFPSmorebetter@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 1y

It's been a slow decline since they hit that world record pit stop and then Merc cried about it and had the rules changed. Ever since then Redbull has just been getting slowly worse with the pit stops. Today was particularly egregious.

It sounds weird as a redbull fan, but I was just happy both of them ended up on the points it was such a disaster filled race for them. Car seemed to just be a shit box all weekend. Pit stop fuckery basically put both of them at the back. Just a weekend to learn from for us....

wise_pancake@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

There were some gremlins out there today for sure

Damage@feddit.it · 8 pts · 1y

Charles always in shit situations, still giving it all

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 7 pts · 1y

Terrible by Mercedes to have Kimi get undercut like that and get stuck in a DRS train after those nice overtakes he pulled.

Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de · 7 pts · 1y

Piastri is the real deal

Probably hidden because they're having problems with Russell's transponder.

Edit: now they showed it again in lap 44 you can see Russell's time was not changing while everyone's time was.

Microw@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

I believe they switched to the old-school method of "gaps updated when passing the starting line" at that point, since overtakes were not being shown in the timing tower

Nighed@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 1y

Russell's transponder is messing things up

Microw@lemm.ee · 7 pts · 1y

Imagine winning a race and 7 days later you run in last.. while being Max Verstappen

Damage@feddit.it · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

idk if Ferrari's pit strategy is good, but at least they gave us some entertainment

DV8@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

I'm not entirely sure I understand what is going on though, with Antonelli getting softs with 29 laps to go.

Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 6 pts · 1y

THREE STOPPER? Merc are either brilliant or throwing Kimi's race here.

Nighed@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I want to see VER's overtake on GAS

wes@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It wasn’t in the last corner as the timing would have suggested but in the first part of the last lap.

Nighed@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 1y

Ah, good spot. That makes more sense.

DV8@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

Crazy how Leclerc still doesn't seem to have enough authority to call his own strategy. We ofcourse only hear soundbites.

Though I don't get again why they didn't split strategy.

Nighed@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 1y (4 replies)

So that's how Ferrari's strategy dept is going to screw things up. Hards!?!

DV8@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (3 replies)

They have to choose something other than medium though. At the very least they are guaranteed track position with a tyre that should take them to the end.

Nighed@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Softs might have been better, will see.

DV8@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

It's entertaining to see what happens at least. And to think I thought I could take a nap during the race. πŸ˜…

helloworld55@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y

That would've been a huge risk, earlier this race you saw that the mediums only lasted about 17 laps, and they had almost 24 to go if they chose soft. It's honestly amazing Russel was able to keep the soft from degrading for the rest of the race, but it was a huge risk and probably a bit of luck. Even Russel said it was ambitious

DV8@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

I'd hope Gasly can finish in the P5 but with the drivers behind him, it looks like he'll need some dnf's.

For some reason I still expect Verstappen and Lando on the podium. But Piastri really should win. Hopefully McLaren strategy doesn't screw him.

Nighed@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 1y

I keep thinking there are engine failures on the straight

Yeah, but under investigation for a false start it seems. Quite a shame if he did since most penalties are 10 seconds now.

Edit: that replay is pretty clear.

Only 5 second penalty, good for him but seems like a very light punishment. Like Palmer is saying he'll take that any time for that advantage. Edit: it's not even misplacing, he literally tried to start too soon.

A full safety car for some debris sweeping? Smells like meddling in here...

FrostyTrichs@crazypeople.online · 4 pts · 1y

Whelp that safety car was pretty convenient...

hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 1y

Forza Red Bull! Grande strategia! 😭

DV8@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

Is it me or are the Ferrari's leaving more plank on the tarmac with all those titanium sparks?

DV8@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

With the way Verstappen is struggling and overheating his tyres, it seems Yuki theoretically has a chance to finish before him.

lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Inspector Verstappen always catching and reporting Norris' errors haha. Just like last year.

Sorry I meant the 2024 Qatar GP where Verstappen noticed that Norris didn't lift under yellow flags and reported it.

They don't have a choice in that do they?

BowserBasher@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Nope, if a driver has a time penalty then it has to be taken when they take their next pit stop. Otherwise it’s added on at the end of the race.

Microw@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Really? I thought they can choose when to serve it, even do an extra pit stop for it if they want.

BowserBasher@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

From the official F1 site under the F1 penalties section.

Time penalties Perhaps the most commonly used penalty, time penalties are issued as either five or 10 seconds. A driver serves this when taking a pit stop, with the car sitting stationary in the pit box for the given amount of time before the mechanics are then allowed to start working on the car. If the mechanics touch the car before the time penalty has been served, another penalty will be issued. Should a driver not pit again after receiving a time penalty, the amount of time will be added on to their finishing time which could potentially drop them down the order. A recent example of this happening was the 2024 United States Grand Prix, where Lando Norris received a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during the latter stages of the race, resulting in him dropping from third to fourth in the final classification.

What a move by Kimi.

Microw@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

Max on mediums and Kimi on softs.. how many stops are they planning to do??

Microw@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

Russell's transponder seems broken lol
