Weren't they originally to move military hardware in the event of an invasion?

That's why they were expanded so much into what is now the interstate highway system but the video focuses more on the earlier stuff like private highways and demand from cyclists wanting better travelling conditions

Of course someone immediately downvotes the video because of the subject. Why not actually watch the thing and see how it covers the good and the bad of how the road system got to be the way it is?
