!greater_sudbury@lemmy.ca is actually the 2nd or 3rd oldest city-based community on lemmy.ca . It's not very active, but should definitely be added to this list.

Also, !canadasoccer@lemmy.ca would be a good community to add to the soccer category.

For team-specific Canadian-based soccer teams, there's !torontofc@lemmy.ca of the MLS (US-league with 3 Canadian-based teams). Other MLS sides include Vancouver Whitecaps and CF Montreal, which I don't think have a community created.

None of the 8 Canadian Premier League teams, nor any of the numerous League1 Canada sides have taken steps to establish their communities yet (as far as I know).

otter@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Thank you! Added all three to the post and the sidebar.

I'll also keep a look out for the other teams if they should pop up :)

SRGray@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 3y

If I see any, I'll be sure to let you know!

otter@lemmy.ca MOD · 7 pts · 3y (17 replies)

If there is a growing community that should be in this list, please comment it below.

If you think a category should / should not be in this list, let us know. There are so many amazing communities, but we also don't want this list to feel overwhelming.

zim@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 2y (1 reply)

!nanaimo@lemmy.ca is another city community.

otter@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 2y

Thanks! Added it to both

Love the banner and icon :)

StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

We’re deep in the summer NBA doldrums but c/torontoraptors@lemmy.ca is trying to get traction.

otter@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 3y

Thank you! added

tjernobyl@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

/c/ThunderBay exists, but doesn't have much activity yet.

otter@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 3y

thank you! Added

dankm@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

There's a fairly inactive community for Saskatoon: !saskatoon@lemmy.ca

Hopefully putting it here gets it more visibility.

Edit: Since we don't really hate each other, even if we pretend to, I'll also point out Regina's community: !regina@lemmy.ca

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y

Thanks! Both have been added to the post & sidebar

Luci@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

/c/Guelph exists. We try to keep it active. It's really just me and @CowsLookLikeMaps@sh.itjust.works posting articles from local news....

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

Thank you! The community looks good :)

I've gone through and updated the post/sidebar + added the community

GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

!CanadianSkincare@lemmy.ca is another community that is becoming more active

otter@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y

Thanks! I've added it to both lists under '💵 Finance, Shopping, Sales'

silvermoon82@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

!kingston_ontario@lemmy.ca exists but is super quiet still.

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

Thanks, it's been added to both spots!

Amuletta@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 314d (2 replies)

I tried to start a community called Assorted Crafts, but for some reason the url shows up with my user name instead of the community name.

https://lemmy.ca/c/Amuletta

How can I fix it? Do I need to blow it away and start again?

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 314d (1 reply)

Ah, I can see how the 'name' field can be misinterpreted. That was supposed to be the short name of the community, and it will appear in the URL. Unfortunately, that field can't be changed after the community as been created. Even if we mess with the database on lemmy.ca, it might show up incorrectly elsewhere.

Since the community is just starting out, the easiest would be to make a new one with the name that you want.

There are also a few other communities that you might enjoy:

It's totally up to you if you want to post in those or if you want to build your own community. If you want to build your own, you can also cross post to / from these communities to help it grow.

Amuletta@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 314d

Thanks, I guess I'll try again.

leftwingmememachine@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 2y (4 replies)

Would love if you could add !ndp@lemmy.ca, and perhaps combine it with canadapolitics under a "politics" category?

otter@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2y

Thank you, updated!

SheamusPatt@mstdn.ca · 1 pts · 2y (2 replies)
leftwingmememachine@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

At least in the browser, adding an exclamation mark redirects you to the community. Without the exclamation mark my phone thinks its an email address.

otter@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2y

Yep, that's what happens in my web browser as well. I get a mailto: link when I click on that

Beaver@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

May I request that !fairvote@lemmy.ca be added under the politics section?

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y

Thanks! Both should be updated now :)

kepa@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 2y

Cheers!

LimpRimble@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

!vancouverisland@lemmy.ca

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y

Thank you, it's been added to both!

LimpRimble@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

!oceanside_bc@lemmy.ca East Vancouver Island - Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y

thank you, it should be added now :)

Beaver@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 2y

Another good town on Lemmy!

Policeshootout@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

!kootenays@lemmy.ca (BC) is not growing much but could be added?

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y

Thanks! It has been added to both post and sidebar

CowsLookLikeMaps@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

There is also /c/TorontoCycling

otter@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 1y

Thanks! I added it under Toronto in the Cities / Local Communities section

cyborganism@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Oh there's also /c/QuebecLibre which is NOT about Québec separatism, but about free (as in LIBRE) open source software in Québec.

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Added as well!

I added both to the 🍁 Social / Culture section, and I listed this one as Logiciels libres au Québec

cyborganism@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

Hahaha that's perfect

corminsterfullerene@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

please add !comoxvalley@lemmy.ca (BC)

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

Thanks! It has been added

cyborganism@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

There's a French Canadian community as well:

Canada_Francais

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

Thanks! Added it to the social/culture section

rainman_104@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Man Vancouver community is a wasteland...

otter@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

We need some more activity there for sure. There are a lot of users here from Vancouver, we just don't seem to use the community much

CowsLookLikeMaps@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1y

Once one person starts posting regularly and others see it, eventually more people will join in!

GrizzlyBur@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I went ahead and made a Windsor community! Windsor is the city I was born in and I grew up in Essex County, so I felt a little left out not being on this list. While the community is named for Windsor, I figured it'd make sense to welcome content from all over Essex county instead of making community bloat for every town in the county.

/c/Windsor or !Windsor@lemmy.ca

otter@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y

Thank you for making that, and sorry for the delay. It's been updated in the post and sidebar now!

ergonomic_importer@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 157d (1 reply)

Don't forget !Curling@lemmy.ca!

edit: whoops, I did not realize how old this post was. Thank you @Shadow@lemmy.ca for bumping it in my active feed

otter@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 153d

No problem! The thread is still active, it just takes me a bit of time to update with new suggestions since I like to update it everywhere at once.

I've added curling to this post, the sidebar, and under the sports topic on Piefed.ca

Eventually once the Lemmy software implements compatible topic lists, I might retire this post so that the community can keep it all up to date :)

GrizzlyBur@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

There are two communities I would really like to see some traffic driven to:

!maplemusic@lemmy.ca - Celebrating Canadian music

!givergaming@lemmy.ca - Celebrating Canadian games, gamedevs and studios

I think these would be an easy add to the Canadian Social / Culture section.

otter@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Thanks! I've added them to the post and sidebar

MapleMusic has a recent post on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca, but !givergaming@lemmy.ca could doesn't so it could be good to post about it. Thanks for sharing them!

GrizzlyBur@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

The owner of those two communities deleted his account. They passed moderation of maplemusic to me and one other person, but givergaming got deleted with their account.

I've created !canadiangaming@lemmy.ca to refill the void. Out of the two, a canadian gaming community was the one I was hoping to take off the most since I'm more of a gamer person than a music person. I've got some plans for fostering a community on there. I'll post about it in !communitypromo once I've got it set up a bit nicer, it is sorta barebones at the moment.

Strange how I didn't want to mod any communities on here but ended up moderating 3!

slykethephoxenix@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Hey, I added Burnaby, Anmore, Squamish, Whistler, Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake.

https://lemmy.ca/c/Burnaby

https://lemmy.ca/c/Anmore

https://lemmy.ca/c/Squamish

https://lemmy.ca/c/Whistler

https://lemmy.ca/c/NiagaraFalls

https://lemmy.ca/c/NiagaraOnTheLake

Will moderate them, but looking for new mods who might live in these areas. I've lived either in or near them. And still visit.

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Thanks, I've added them all

If you want an example of a call for mods, here's one I posted from a while back: https://lemmy.ca/post/31769390

I love the photos you chose for each community. Looking forward to seeing them grow!

slykethephoxenix@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 348d (2 replies)

Hey Otter, is the admin DM checked here? I sent a DM to there asking about taking over a specific community here that has an inactive mod and also inviting users from various Canadian Reddit subs to use this Lemmy, but it's been like 2 or so weeks and no reply. No rush, or being pushy for a yes or anything, just want to know if it's been received.

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 347d (1 reply)

Hi Slyke,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you! The team has been extra busy these past few days. We did receive the message and we should have acknowledged it sooner.

Someone should hopefully review is soon and get back to you!

slykethephoxenix@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 347d

All good, thanks for letting me know!

Beaver@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 2y (5 replies)

I have recently created two first nations based communities on Lemmy.ca as requested from the 2023 instance census. Please add !fns@lemmy.ca & !fnl@lemmy.ca to the community list.

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Thank you! I've renamed the last section and added the new communities there

Beaver@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I also made !inuit and !indigenous communities. Gotta cover everyone :)

otter@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 174d

Thanks! I've added this to the post, the community sidebar, and under the Ontario topic on Piefed.ca

Sunshine@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Hello!

I have made the 2 political communities: Animal Protection Party of Canada and BC Greens for environmentalists and vegans to discuss important issues on the fediverse as I would like to encourage more growth on community owned social media ran by everyday canadians and to avoid the conflicts that may arise with corporate owned social media namely Facebook and Twitter interfering with campaigning that goes against their commercial interests.

May I request that !appc and !bcgreens be listed under !ndp under the politics section.

Please and Thank you <3

otter@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

For sure! Sorry for the delay, I wanted to sit down at a computer to make the changes properly and check over all the links, and then kept procrastinating.

They should be updated now, thank you for making those!

Sunshine@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

Thank you Otter! A lot of things work nicely doing on the computer.

We got 13 political parties in BC and 18 In Canada. 15% and 16% are respectively covered on Lemmy.

So hopefully more join the list so that more people can receive their messaging on the Fediverse.

stinkytofuisgood@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 184d (1 reply)

I don’t think my (our) community should be put in this main list. But I’d like to mention it:

CanadaGrownBusiness

If you check it out, please read the sidebar to see if it’s right for you.

Thanks!

otter@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 174d

Thanks! I've added it in this post, the community sidebar, and under the Finance/Shopping topic on piefed.ca
