How would they NOT fuck it? I loved Shogun, but the story is over. They told a good story- there isn't more to explain with the story told in Season 1, IMO.

It follows the historical events that came after. The book is over, but History isn't.

Sure but if the same 2 actors are leading again, with the same characters, they're not moving forward much at all. They're just hoping to capitalize on the success of season 1. Hell, the comments they themselves make about writing season 2 already inspire no confidence.
I just don't see any real story they can make with these two at this point. Not one that won't feel shoe-horned, anyway.

Sounds like they should have picked another novel to work from... it's always amazing when people think they can somehow create something incredible from nothing. Almost every adaptation that has been worth it has come from source material, and we have plenty of examples of what happens when they either run out of that or try to deviate from it. Now I am sure there's a few that have succeeded, but I am drawing a blank on what, and it's also very rare.
