Bird Flrule

And here in the US, I've also got to worry about the tariff shortages 🙃

It won't be a pandemic. The rest of the world isn't stupid enough to appoint an antivaxer as secretary of health.

Start accepting us refugees and I'll be happy to hear that 😅

I'm pretty sure a good many refugees run away from oppressive regimes

hOrni@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1y (1 reply)

You are right, I did a stupid.

Taalnazi@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

That is very mature to realise, honestly. Can commend that.

eldain@feddit.nl · 13 pts · 1y

When the measles get to out-evolve the vaccine in the US petridish, shit could get nasty.

entwine413@lemm.ee · 12 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Pandemics don't have to be global. It's just over a large area.

owsei@programming.dev · 7 pts · 1y

WHO defines it as "an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries..."

general_kitten@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

usually the definition of pandemic at least says it has to be multiple continents

Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I'm actually pretty sure it doesn't say it has to be

entwine413@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

It usually doesn't say it has to be, it just uses multiple continents as an example of a large geographic area. Of course, there are multiple different definitions out there.

Regardless, it's silly to assume the virus would stay in the US.

amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 1y

even if you achieve herd immunity, there will always be breakthrough cases, as with all pandemics. vaccines without respirators, contact tracing, purifying the air, etc etc will lead to the same catastrophic results as covid.

most countries abandoned basic health measures for covid, and that should alarm everyone for the next pandemic

cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 1y

to be fair, wes streeting in the uk isn't any better

Taalnazi@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 1y (14 replies)

Hang on, what's going on over there?

9point6@lemmy.world · 55 pts · 1y (5 replies)

They're having both a bird flu & measles problem at the same time and burying their heads in the sand about it.

Oh and they fired a load of people doing Ebola research

And this one isn't strictly a pandemic, but the USA is currently basically carpet bombing parts of Mexico (with their consent) to prevent the northward progression of screwworms—which are even worse than you're currently imagining.

I've probably forgotten something else biological that mother nature is currently doing to indicate her displeasure in the politically driven ignorance they've got going on over there.

wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I recall a story, can't remember where I read it, where a creator deity demonstrates their displeasure with the leader's treatment of a downtrodden minority by sending a large number of "plagues". I remember there was a plague of flies, all the livestock started dying of sudden disease, and an epidemic of boils broke out... Hmm... If only the US were filled with people who believed in the literal interpretation of certain old books...

ETA: of course, that would require these people to be able to read.

StrawberryCreamSoda@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 1y

Some of them do believe it's a biblical plague, but they think it's because of woke or gay.

kboy101222@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 1y

You know it's bad if any foreign country is asking the USA to send military planes...

And demolishing all science and public health related institutions so any kind of outbreak will run free with no barriers.

SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 8 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Yep! Gotta love 'murica! Land of the stupid, apparently

entwine413@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Unless their goal is to kill people.

SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Sure, but was the voters' goal suicide?

bobs_monkey@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

They didn't really think that far ahead, their primary concern was brown and trans people bad.

_wizard@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Here I am sitting in bed with covid. First time ever having it.

hangry@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 1y

Pff, that is so 2020

collapse_already@lemmy.ml · 8 pts · 1y

We are getting rid of the people who detect and report pandemics. First, you will only notice high absentee rates at the office. Then you'll start getting large numbers of invitations to funerals for people who seemed perfectly healthy the last time you saw them. Then, you'll develop a scrachy feeling in your throat. Good luck...

FundMECFS@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

COVID is not over

SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

True enough, but we've got bird flu to worry about too 🙃

AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

And measles, and polio, and......
