If you want computers to not have an arbitrary line in the sand when referring to the past, you need to be able to do calculations with time from before the epoch, that's why it needs to be signed.
Off the top of my head, working out the age of someone born before 1970 is going to be a calculation that happens countless times a day

Yeah, light roasts generally have brighter and more complex flavours, which is what I've come to enjoy most out of a good coffee
I can still enjoy a dark coffee the same way I can still enjoy a Guinness, but if I'm choosing, I'll be picking the more complex drink with a greater gamut of variation between different ones

Given for the past decade, the current automated system for places that want to do this seems to be to scan your driving license or passport to store in some private database for some arbitrary length of time, this seems to be an improvement from that from where I'm sat. At least a random pub landlord, that knows nothing about infosec, doesn't get a copy of your ID anymore.
Though hopefully this stays at the places that I don't really go to given they're pretty much only deployed in places targeting students. I can't imagine your standard boozer is going to suddenly deploy door checks on everyone when there weren't any before
