How come we still haven't engineered a solution to this??

There is no clear way to get the toast out without using a conductive implement like a fork or your finger.

We've been to the Moon ffs

Edit: Woah seems Lemmy really likes this kind of casual post

We have, most toasters let you lift the lever higher to get it out.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 21 pts · 1d (9 replies)

Mine only does it by like 10%. It must be a bad make

betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Get a better toaster or a toaster oven with a sliding tray.

sundray@lemmus.org · 18 pts · 1d

Toaster Oven for life!

yermaw@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 1d (2 replies)

You have to master the art of the toss. Push the lever hard and then catch it while its in the air.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Bread-jitsu it is

yermaw@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d

Will breakfast?

Skillcheck first.

MajesticTechie@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

To be fair. The bread in there looks tiny. So not surprising it only raises it a little

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Yeah, the loaf was blob shaped and these were the ends

Edit: it's this weird sour rye bread that I don't actually really like

tomi000@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Bauernbrot

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 19h

Indeed. Although over here they call it Šumavský chléb

Hal@piefed.nz · 7 pts · 1d

My favourite is when a toaster with the lift function raises to a high point that's lower than the high point on one without the lift.

Or that time I went through every display toaster in the store to get the one that lifted the highest, then when I bought one and took it home the one in the box only lifted to a high point an inch lower than the display model.

Sibshops@feddit.cl · 44 pts · 1d (4 replies)

Push it down then up real fast and then catch the toast as it flies out.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 17 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Thank you

Sibshops@feddit.cl · 17 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Wait, that's actually what worked?

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 15 pts · 1d

Not today but you made me remember I've seen others do it. With the correct toaster of course

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d

It sounds like a shitpost but it works

Wooden chopstick(s)

Or plastic I guess, but mine are wooden

PlaidBaron@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 1d

Yeah. Chopsticks are the answer.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 9 pts · 1d

That's really clever. I even have a couple of pairs

buttmasterflex@piefed.social · 2 pts · 1d

We have a set of bamboo tongs for this. Works like a charm

yermaw@sh.itjust.works · 27 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Most toasters you can lift the pushy-downy-handle up a bit more than it rests at to lift the toast out.

My big problem is that (in the UK at least, don't know about other nations) the standard sized bread doesn't fit fully in a toaster, so the top ~3cm is still bread.

Dyskolos@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 1d

Same here (krautland). My brain is not adaptable to accepting this 10% less toast

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 1d

WOAH. I don't think I could afford that unfortunately

Hal@piefed.nz · 3 pts · 1d

So if your toast isn't taller than those sides, can you open it sideways or something? Remember those bars are scorching hot.

Pika@sh.itjust.works · 23 pts · 1d

We have... I'm more impressed that you found a toaster that doesn't. I don't think I've had a toaster in the last ten years that didn't give a little bit of leeway on the lever to let you pull up a little bit more to be able to grab it.

gedaliyah@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1d (1 reply)

There is absolutely a Technology Connections about this.

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 1d

Rapidly push the lever up to eject your toast and grab it midair. Works 95% of the time

anon_8675309@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 23h (1 reply)

That bandle that you push down? Push it UP instead. This is a solved problem.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 19h

Not on this toaster

BoosBeau@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 1d

When my toast gets stuck like that, I just pour my beans directly into the toaster and eat it all like cereal

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 15 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Tell your servant to reach in and pull out the toast.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 19h

Those lazy bastards! You're right, mine managed to trick me into thinking I must pull it out myself... No supper tonight!

eurodyne@piefed.world · 14 pts · 1d

“We” have had toasters like this since at least the 1920s.

Sorry for whatever parallel universe you live in that doesn’t have toasters…

BC_viper@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Get better bread.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 1d

No

adarza@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 1d

the walmart store brand sliced bread has been made so cheap now, there's no 'substance'. it can't stand up in a toaster without literally "wilting". so it will toast crooked and then not pop up because it gets stuck. i have an old toaster, probably from the 1980s. not for 'bagels' either, just a normal narrow-slot toaster. it has no safety cut-off on it.. i dunno if that's even a thing.. but it will not shut off the heating elements when it gets stuck and can't "pop up". the whole thing is a fire hazard.

TootSweet@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1d (5 replies)

Toaster oven. Solves this problem entirely.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 1d (4 replies)

Like the clamshell thing? Those are good but it's too much hastle

TootSweet@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Not a clamshell thing. A little oven with a door on the front that opens downward. Some of them also have air fryer capability. I've got a Ninja Flip and I'm quite happy with it. One nice feature about it is that you can stand it up on its back when not in use in order to save counter space. I threw away my regular-old bread toaster when I got it. And of course it's great for pizzas or melting cheese on your toast or air frying tater tots or just using like you would an oven to roast or what have you.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Interesting, looks quite nifty indeed. There are so many obscure kitchen appliances that I didn't know existed

Brkdncr@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Where are you from where a toaster oven is obscure?

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1d

Eastern Europe...

stoy@lemmy.zip · 11 pts · 1d

I don't know about your toaster, but mine is built so you can lift the handle slightly from the standard position, which lifts the bread mechanism and allows you to access the bread without poking into the toaster.

DudleyMason@lemmy.ml · 9 pts · 1d

The solution is almost as old as the device itself: thin wooden tongs.

fartographer@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1d (2 replies)

The problem is that you're trying to use a fork or your finger. Bread goes into the toaster. You're obviously supposed to fish it out with a bread knife.

Practice your literary skills: can you guess which part of the statement is sarcasm? Write your answers below. Make sure to show your work.

Grostleton@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

It's the "bread goes into the toaster" part.

After all...

fartographer@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

I sinceriousely thought you were gonna tell me that the bread goes in the square hole.

I struggle to express my surprise and delight from the video you sent, though.

Nawor3565@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 9 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I think your toaster might be broken.... The pieces are supposed to rise half way up after it's done toasting

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Nah, I'm just using a non-standard bread size

Tikiporch@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d

Kinda seems like you answered your own question.

HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 9 pts · 1d (2 replies)

The solution is bigger bread.

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 19h (1 reply)

Nah man shut up I'm saving the environent

HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 17h

I doubt that toaster is powered by renewables...

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d (7 replies)

The solution is on your end, don't put in slices that are too thick.

There's more than one way to toast a slice.

There are toasters with wider slots:

Here's a conveyor toaster:

https://youtu.be/GEOCBukuwK4

Here's another cool, old toaster, you push a lever to flip the bread, toasts one side at a time:

https://youtu.be/ABbmJSfwMoY

This would work over your stove:

A glass sided toaster that splits in half:

Wow, you have managed to make me a toaster enthusiast! Please do get in touch with Technology Connections

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I just did a few minutes of searching. Alec is the OG, he'll do toasters in his own time, if he hasn't already.

Feathercrown@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

He has

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1d

I especially like that 2nd one

SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1d

Speaking of the extra wide one, I have tried toasting tofu before. Was nice and crunchy

DisasterTransport@startrek.website · 1 pts · 1d

The comments on the antique one sided toaster are silly. yeah dude let's RETVRN to a time when toasters were slower and more likely to burn your house down lmao. It's a cool specimen, and lots of older stuff is genuinely designed better than newer stuff, but not this one.

MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 1d

LodeMike@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 1d

Use a toaster oven

recursivethinking@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 22h

Just wanna say I own a set of medium silicone-tip Tongs which are useful in general but they would be my go-to in this situation.

Also I recently saw toaster tongs somewhere for like $5 ... They looked like wooden chopsticks but attached at one end

But also I haven't owned a toaster in 20y once I discovered the Toaster Oven, which fits more toast, has more granular control, and can cook other things. My current one is like 10yo I got it for $20.

I forgot this was ever a problem actually until I saw those wooden tongs and within a week I see your post.

If i remember correctly, this is a gimmick so you can have a romantic toast breakfast where it releases your toast at the same time (British culture, eh?).

But when I heard about it, i instead honed in on how its design provides a FABULOUS solution to getting ALL-CRUmBED-oUT, which is recurring the problem you identify in your post. See, since the sweetheart toaster suspends the toast in the air and heats on one side at a time (a more elegant solution, I may add), it doesn't trap any debris of any sort into any part of of the device at any time - Try saying that with a mouthful of jammy bread!

This particular toaster design is from 106 years ago I think.

That sounds like it was written by a LLM AI. Why do you, and other people love depending on them? It is inaccurate, and bad.

spicehoarder@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I saw somewhere that the brain has a really hard time distinguishing abundance and oppression. Because thinking is hard, having a robot spew garbage into your eye sockets is somehow more comforting to the majority of people. Including those in this very thread!

CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d

I grew up before wiki, and google. It isn't hard to research stuff without ai, imo.

FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (5 replies)

Which bit of it? The screenshot is googles AI, yes, which comes up when you Google things. Everyone is way too familiar with it to get mad about me using that. The rest of the comment, I.e the text, is all my words.

CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

The first 2 paragraphs sound like ai. I also don't use Google AI, I ignore it.
