Metroid Planets.

A polished up interpretation of the original with QOL stuff and you can generate new planets with the help of a number of handmade rooms that can be sorted randomly. Choose them wisely.

A fangame infamously taken down before Nintendo's reveal of the remake of Metroid 2 for the 3DS. Oh but it's good, I promise.

Hyper Metroid: Super

A polished up a version of a well-known Super Metroid romhack that I can now recommend whole-heartedly. I would compare it to Return to Dinosaur Land (Super Mario World) and Super Mario Star Road (Super Mario 64) as a mod to wade your toes in before you try a deluge of others. Naturally they're not going to be easier but they're not balls to the walls difficult so give it a shot if you've mastered for Super Metroid and are hungry for a new experience.

Extra credit if you're in a book club that is instead of video games.
