Or they have injuries that deteriorate beyond healing.

It's true that if you don't use it you lose it. Especially when you get up in age and people want to do things for you all the time. Your body gets used to not doing those things and so you lose muscle mass or range of motion. Simple things like carrying groceries can help maintain but people get lazy.
