It's part of American foreign policy to let Israel do much of their dirty work in the region. Netanyahu is necessary for this since he's a classic soulless sociopath.

Pretty sure I saw multiple reports that during the first retaliatory bombing, American troops were on the ground operating SAMs, so we didn't sit anything out at any time.
