Idk about the US but I've seen a semi-serious french video where they tested most of the TP available on the market and concluded that single ply was actually very often one of the most economical and ecological choices (even considering that you would use about 2 times as much). IIRC there was only one multi ply brand that was worth its price when compared to cheap single ply. However I think the "commercial" huge rolls of single ply paper were found to be the biggest scam
