Hello everyone and welcome to the newly created Dumpster Diving community!
To start things off, break the ice, and begin building a userbase I thought we could share how we found out about dumpster diving, how we first got into it personally and how often we do it
I found out about it around eight years ago while browsing hitchhiking communities, found TrashWiki and thought it was a great way to give the middle finger to capitalism while saving some money and helping the planet!
At the moment I lived with my parents and it wasn't really viable, but when I first moved away on my own I started doing it on a monthly basis. I wasn't very good at it (overly careful and never found good spots) though so I ended up dropping it. My interest in it has grown again since I'm moving to a new city in the coming weeks and I'm hoping to get back into it!

A friend of the family came by the house once with a big sack of all kinds of cables that he pulled from the trash. It was my job as the geek kid in the house to go through them and pull out what we need.
My study of infosec of course also covers it.. probably at first from 2600 magazine but as well the infosec prof covered it.

I never actually enter a dumpster but I always saw my parents picking up things from next to the trash. They told me that whenever I would get rid of something that may have a value or a use, I should put it next to the dumpster so that other people have a chance to take it or take parts of it.
Nowadays, the towns around me are criminalising this activity. Actual trash to big for a dumpster should not be left on the street but obviously the lawmaker never practice this very normal social activity from my youth.
I got new toys and books this way. Small pieces of fourniture, wood to repair or build stuff around my house, paper and cardboard supplies for crafting. It is a way to trade within your community that is getting lost.

Oh, definitely! Before I throw something out I'll ask my friends if they want it (group chat or story or similar) and if not Il'll make sure to leave it on a bench with or on top of a bin with a note.
It's technically illegal here too to leave "trash" outside of the dump but nobody follows it and it's seldom enforced
