In Switzerland for example the ISP is required to keep a log of your activity. The VPN provider however does not have this obligation by court rule. Reuters article

But if Tor is too slow, you can layer multiple VPN providers, if they accept anonymous payments. Like Mullvad. Then you get a reasonable amount of obscurity to your internet pathway.

But I disagree if the original poster, I know for a certainty my local ISP is selling my browsing data flow to date of brokers. Hi Comcast! Given it's a certainty using a VPN doesn't put me in a worse position, there's a net positive chance my VPN provider is not as sucky as Comcast.

I live in a third world country with a lot of restrictions and probably a lot of spying on citizens. I rather trust a VPN than my ISP.

At a personal level, I get very annoyed with arguments that are basically, it's not perfect therefore you should do nothing.

It feels like a disingenuous point to debate from.
