Something happened a few years ago that really poisoned my view of being vulnerable around partners.

Today I had my first psych session about dealing with it.

I'm really proud of myself.

Heartbroken. So are the cats, draped themselves despondently all over me seeking comfort

oztrin@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 2y (1 reply)

The cats did not want to let me up aside from to feed them, which was not a problem, except I had to do a Coles run.
On;ly problem was that by the time I'd peeled myself out from under, showered etc and gone down, the day was nearly over.
Eh well, I've been hard at it most of the week with Operation Sort Shit so a slow day certainly won't hurt.

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

I love blaming my cat for not doing stuff. She's earning her keep.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Every morning I greet my little dog with "Good morning princess. Would you like breakfast?" And every morning he responds with a meow. We don't care who hears us.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

Melbcat never wants to let me up to make her brekkie, she wants to keep on sleepy cuddling

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Mine's walkies. First thing in the morning sans rain, the dog gets a walk for a poo. Well after wakeup cuddles.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

My dog likes a feed first so he can run outside and leave a turd in the most inconvenient spot he can find.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 2y (10 replies)

So the newly reincarnated clifton hotel in kew is finally open and their menu is up (which I've been waiting for, for 3 yrs).

Showed bboi butters the price of their bolog and pizza:

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (2 replies)

HOW does he manage to be so effortlessly photogenic???? This cat is a heartbreaker for sure.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Honestly he's like the apex of the breed.

The owner really lucked out with this one.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

You may not like it, but this is what peak purrformance looks like.

anotherspringchicken@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Is that the one at Kew junction? I used to live near there many years ago, and it was a complete dive.

Bboi Butters knows he can cook those at home for a fraction of the price

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

Yea that one. It's been through a few owners (and has a rich and colourful history).. This new one is upmarket-ish italian.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Just had a look at the menu myself out of curiosity, it's not in my neck of the woods so I'm unlikely to go anyway, but.. wow. Ur Bois response is apt. I don't know what irritates me more, the prices or the irregular sizing of the numbers on the prices throughout the menu.

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Busy little dog today. You must reward him.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

I have shopped till I dropped! And by dropped I mean sat down due to chronic pain. Though I have to say I have done a lot better. Got some manga's, I even went to incub8r (for those who love artist alley at conventions this is one way to support artists. They have a lot of fan stuff, I love it!). And I got a book I've been wanting for a few months now.

Only downside is that I didn't get the manga I really wanted. But I am happy with what I have. I hope everyone has had a good Saturday!

Just say your kid has gone out for the night (and overnight) and you find some special biscuits that have been in the cupboard for the past 2ish years would you give them a crack? Also would you wash them down with a large Coles express coffee even though you've already had two large coffees and a cup of tea today? Also if you were to experiment what comedies would you watch?

Update: we ate the biscuits. Surprisingly still crispy but with a slightly out of date taste. Ah well let's see.

Study success - I was further along in my assignment than I thought. It's finished with days to go. Just one online quiz to go which I can do this afternoon, then I can focus on the new material I'm behind on. A nice brain-clearing walk with Mr Woof is planned first.

I'm struggling a bit to get everything done on time with these subjects (sustainable housing and gardening) not because they are hard but because they relate to my own life so much that I keep agonising over decisions and spending a lot of time on little details. It does make it even more worthwhile doing it though.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y

Soxcat is back to regular operation - no deathmatch antagonism but no hyper cuddly confused hormonal shenanigans either. Thank fuck we can both relax on this miserable weekend. I also need to buy more churus because that is clearly the way to her heart.

Demeaning, contemptuous and should be scrubbed from the collective vocabulary. Ageism at its most rampant.

To give TW some credit I have heard it used in mildly derogatory ways to classify a group of "old biddies" who are a bit over inquisitive and have too much time. I wasn't familiar with the phrase till I heard a horticulture lecturer mention offhand how when he gave public lectures, 90% of his questions were from said group, and he could never leave on time because he'd be accosted by them afterwards asking questions about their own back yards and insisting he listen to their own anecdotal experiences...

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

The phrase does seem to be developing that meaning - that is, adversely affected by hormone fluctuations. Still functions as a general put down. cf. on the rag, baby brain, etc. Back in my youth, it was a way to dismiss post-menopausal women from consideration, while doing a bit of 'respect' for their age.

From what I understand of it itโ€™s used to review mostly things related to penalties in relation to goal scoring both defensively and offensively and thereโ€™s also a video reviewer for offside calls.

Other than those circumstances the VAR wonโ€™t be used for reviews I think from the limited amount of games Iโ€™ve watched.

Rest day from exercise for me today and thank goodness too. I caught a chill at work yesterday. There's a big roller door that's kept open during the day for deliveries, and even though it's got heavy plastic strips hanging there, that freezing cold wind was whipping straight in. I was working at a prep bench right near there. I started to feel the impact of that fall I had a couple of days ago too and mopping the floor became like an uphill battle of exhaustion. Then by the time I was on the bus coming home I'd started violently shivering.

Woke up during the night and I was freezing and everything hurt and I could hardly move. Managed to get back to sleep after putting on an extra layer of clothes, beanie and hoodie, and took some pain killers. And cranked the heater up. Feel a lot better this morning just exhausted.

Edit: got to talk to the boss about closing that door during the day when it's like that, even though it's a huge inconvenience for everyone. Also, can anyone recommend any reasonably priced hoodies that are actually warm? A lot of them seem so cheaply made and aren't actually warm, just a layer (like the one I was wearing unfortunately).

Is it an option to wear a menโ€™s hoodie? A lot of the time womenโ€™s clothes are a lot thinner and crappier for the exact same thing.

If you donโ€™t overheat in them maybe you could also try some thermals or woolen spencers, or a belly band. There are also heated vests made for warehouse workers

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

You're right you know; I wear men's trackies because in general I found they're warmer, better made and cheaper. So I wouldn't have a problem wearing men's hoodies.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (8 replies)

I hate the men's vs women's clothing quality thing so much. It's so prevalent in work wear as well. Sadly by having a rather "womanly" figure men's clothes usually feel like arse on me.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

"It's so prevalent in work wear as well."

It really is! I really noticed when I decided to buy nonslip steel caps for work.. the women's ones had pink details (because that's so important๐Ÿ™„) but were obviously not as well made, and as for the "nonslip" sole.. guffaws derisively

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Omg, work boots are the WORST. I have two pairs of She Wears from a while ago and they're better than most but still not great (granted, I have disproportionately thin ankles). No way I'm wrecking my feet with poorly fitting, overly heavy men's boots or shit quality women's boots that were clearly an afterthought.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

In this case, being a largish person with ankles like tree stumps and feet like boats is actually working in my favour for once! Although I still lament not being able to even try on most of the adorable and petite women's shoes I see sighs

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (4 replies)

It sucks. Theyโ€™re mostly too big for me or it would be open season. Boyโ€™s clothes are better for that but you still have to try them on

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (3 replies)

It's the cut that gets me. Fits around the boobs - shit around the shoulders and arms. And vice versa. Same with bum/waist ratio. Mind you, lots of women's clothes that have this issue too.

FWIW I often wear two hoodies.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

That's what I'm wearing right now, they're getting a bit thin and old.

useless_modern_god@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Maybe pair the hoodie with a long sleeve thermal top?

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

Need to buy some thermals, good idea. Mine are all a bit worn out.

StudChud@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

The best hoodie I have is actually a merch hoodie from Inner North Brewing Company. I get cold so damn fast when I'm still, but that hoodie is amazing; only needs a shirt or longsleeve underneath and I'm super toasty when standing still.

They dont seem to have them on the website anymore, but if you like I may head there later today and can check sizes and prices for you?

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Thanks, that'd be great!

StudChud@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Easy! I'll send you a message tonight/tomorrow with the info :D

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Would you consider a puffer jacket with a hood? The loft insulates very well and does better against wind in my experience, compared to hoodies. Although, ones that are very warm and also not bulky can be pricey.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

I have to be able to fit an apron over it, but that might be an idea.. I do need a new puffer jacket though, I wore my last one until it literally started falling apart!

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I used to try and wear hoodies and layer up when doing field work, but I'd never feel as warm as when I had just a thermal and a good puffer jacket on. I'd often wear a hi viz jacket over the puffer so I think an apron is doable...

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Nice, I'll check out some puffer jackets and thermals as well. It makes me realise how much I've neglected my wardrobe: as things have worn out or fallen apart I haven't replaced them.

Morning peoples. Does everyone brush before or after they have breakfast? It's 99% of the time before for me.

ReadEverything@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 2y (1 reply)

After breakfast always, I donโ€™t understand why you would do it before unless you like minty breakfast?

heyheyitskay@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

Hmm I do enjoy mint in general but not sure if that's the reason. More of a habit.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Breakfast at home after. Breakfast outside of home before.

baconmash@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

same

heyheyitskay@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Good strategy.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (1 reply)

After! Wtf, I once stayed with an otherwise very sweet and lovely aunt when I was a kid and she insisted on before and I nearly got into a fight with her because of how irrational it was. If I've slept all night with brushed teeth, it makes no sense to brush again just before the very activity that is the entire reason to brush ones teeth. I would only ever brush after, unless I'm going out and for whatever reason my mouth is a bit off (medications, improper brushing, late night snack).

heyheyitskay@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

You've got a point. Weird how everyone feels quite strongly about their preference eh. For me it's more of a habit. Scientifically it doesn't seem to make a difference but apparently the recommendation is to brush at least 30 mins after food. I must say though seeing people brush in the office bathroom after lunch always gets me.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

30 mins before or after eating to preserve the enamel.

heyheyitskay@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Hmm interesting I've only seen the 30 mins reference when it's about brushing after. Teeth are weird.

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (4 replies)

What were you planning on watching?

baconmash@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (3 replies)

shirokuma cafe and hataraku saibou. Just read the r/crunchyroll instructions. Using incognito browser works.

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Oh I think I've had Shirokuma Cafe on my list to watch for a while. It seems Crunchyroll is still having issues because I went to show my partner an episode of Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san (definitely recommend it if you like slice-of-life kind of manga, mixed with a "oof this is too real" if you've worked any customer service/customer-facing job) and it wouldn't work if I fullscreen the video but you could still hear it.

My partner says that it's One Piece day so that might be why it's borked itself.

Edit: Okay so if you download the app version on windows (if you have a windows PC) then it works. Tried it myself. But yeah browser is just... nope. Weird.

baconmash@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

browser without adblock works. I use incognito

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Yeah that was another solution, it didn't work for me. But hopefully it's fixed now.
