This #MosaicMonday we travel metaphorically to the Bardo Museum in Tunis to see this beautiful marine scene with what looks to be a goddess holding a rope. I’m not familiar with this iconography, but have seen this scene repeated in other mosaics, so if you know what’s going on here, I’d love to learn more.

If it's from Tunis, is that Roman or Carthaginian?
Suddenly it occurs to me that I've never thought of Carthaginian mosaics and art as a thing or category until right at this very moment.

@niktemadur@lemmy.world it is both in a way. Geographically we’re certainly talking about Carthage and surrounds but then mosaics are a popular art form in the imperial period, well after Roman conquest of the region
