Just imagine that a woman has about 10 children, then forced them to have about 5 grandchildren per child. Now she has a gang. And all of that only because she wants to have full control over the neighborhood /s
There isn't much detail in the English article, but to give you an example of how crazy things got, the 25th child of a family had free education... The average was 14 child per family at its peak! French Canadians in New Brunswick went from 15% to 40% of the province's population over a century even if french immigration was basically non existent while English immigration was...
You make it sound like bad to have a family gang.
It has so many uses, great for ilegal stuff, great for polítics, great for business, it is all benefits of controlling up to certain point a large group of people and having a strong link with them.

Never mention a girl to my parents ever.
Last time I mentioned one was my girlfriend of 6 months (at the time) that wanted to come visit. I was in my 20's.
If you going to bully me about my personal life then you don't deserve to hear about it.

If we all told them more about our everyday stuff, then maybe it wouldn't come off as particularly special if you mention a girl's name once

I don’t think moms realize this can go the other way. When I was a kid I learned to just never mention any girl’s name, regardless of the reason.

My mom still does this ... about a girl I went out with in 1987 ... who went back to Belgium afterwards.

not just moms, friends can do this too, oh you are talking to a woman? Are you in love? what's going on?
what's going on is nothing, we talk sometimes like friends/acquaintances do.
