Forgive me, but what does “removed” mean in this context? Were the snakes killed, or deported?

Killed. After Hurricane Andrew, dozens of exotic pet places were leveled, and Florida is paradise for them. No real natural predators and limitless food. They are killing stuff alligators eat, and gators too. They're hard to find even though they're pervasive. Gators are a huge part of the ecosystem here, and after getting them off the endangered list, these things screw with the balance.
