I'm thinking about getting back into #IRC especially as my local LUG uses it. Its been decades (mIRC / Pidgin when it was Gaim days) since I last was active on the protocol. On desktop, there's obviously lots of options for clients, but what do people use on #Android these days?

Also any important things that might have changed since then?

Never left. We still send syslogs to irc channels. Can't imagine my job without that.

It’s nice to use ZNC (a “bouncer”) on a machine that’s always connected, and then connect into that from any clients you’re using. That way you stay logged in.

Another option, in case you're already hosting a Matrix server, is Heisenbridge, which is an IRC bouncer acting as a Matrix appservice, so you see IRC channels as rooms in your Matrix client. I've been using it for a few years now, it's pretty decent.

@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al Not answering you so much as piling on - I tried several Android IRC solutions about a year ago and in the end decided not of them really worked for me.

So I'll be interested to see what other answers you get.

@Neblib@mastodo.neoliber.al IRC and mobile does not go well together without some additional help, since IRC requires a persistent TCP connection to the server, and any interruption is quite invasive. It also drains battery a lot.

But with additional layer that keeps your IRC connection alive, it's doable. It's called "an IRC bouncer". I guess IRCNow is a good place to start exploring, since they apparently offer bouncer access for free.
