After inviting Dr Seward to come attend to his fiancée yesterday (under the guise of attending lunch), today Arthur turns around and says "no, I won't be there." So now Lucy will be alone with someone from whom she recently rejected a marriage proposal.
Reminder that Ring is the name of the Godalming (Arthur's family's) estate.
