It's purple! Why aren't there more purple birds?

Where do I go to see purple adorable hummingbirds? I would love to see some one day.

WatermelonCalves@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

I took this in my back patio actually. I live in the Palm springs area. There are at least 3 of them total that live in my condo complex.

fiat_lux@kbin.social · 1 pts · 3y

I never expected to want to go to Palm Springs! If I'm ever out that way, at least now I'll have a good reason.

Love hummingbirds. Their wing motion is so mesmerising. Vicious bastards though.

PorkTaco@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 3y

They think they're vicious anyway. CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP!!

East of the Rockies, we get ONE species of hummingbird. But they're still beautiful creatures.

CADmonkey@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3y

Whats this? A therapod dinosaur filling the niche of a bee?

Anticorp@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 3y

Such a beautiful and proud birb.

CeeBee@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 3y (4 replies)

They are very pretty. But they don't look like this photoshopped version.

Edit: I'll admit when I'm wrong. It's real.

Bruno@feddit.de · 16 pts · 3y (1 reply)

I was wondering why you guys are saying it's photoshopped. Even Wikipedia haste incredible photos of this species.

Edit: picture embedd didn't work

Agingtoofast@reddthat.com · 6 pts · 3y

I agree with you, Bruno. It looks real to me. A Costa Humming bird like you said earlier. So cute!

WatermelonCalves@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Not photoshopped, just edited in Lightroom. Here's the raw. It really looks like that.

CeeBee@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3y

Thanks for sharing that.

The jacked up contrast threw me off.

Also, blues and purples are rare in nature, especially in animals. Which is part of why I jump to that conclusion.

No one noticing this is a terrible photoshop makes me suspicious Lemmy is mostly bots and stupid people

Bruno@feddit.de · 12 pts · 3y (7 replies)

I think you're wrong. It's called Calypte costae https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costa%27s_hummingbird

Still not sure what you mean. The brightness of the colors changes alot according to the angle like you can see in videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlYecLQDaUM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDkeIVGmSA8

I brightened the pic up in Lightroom for my own aesthetic purposes, but I don't think I went overboard personally. The branch is actually a dried tip of a succulent so maybe that's where you're seeing coloration? Here's another shot, unedited and zoomed out a little more.

Bruno@feddit.de · 5 pts · 3y

Thanks for the original photo. It's a awesome shot of a wonderful bird 👍

billy_bollocks@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 3y

It’s a great photo. Try not to give a shit about what some rando on the internet is complaining about. The adults in the room like your photo

dandroid@dandroid.app · 9 pts · 3y

Or maybe we just aren't insufferable, chronically online people who have to scream "fake" at everything.

WatermelonCalves@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 3y

I mean it's edited in Lightroom, but just lighting. The colors are not altered. Here's the raw so you can compare.

Y'all are fucking harsh, damn. I just wanted to share my photography. It's edited in Lightroom for lighting, but the colors are real. Here is the unedited version.

Bruno@feddit.de · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

I was supporting you. And showing as reference other pictures that the bird is actually that colored. I didn't and still don't see any problem with edits. Please continue sharing your awesome shots. Small edits are fully normal with ones pictures.

I appreciate you, thank you!

Anticorp@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 3y

Even seeing a hummingbird sitting still is an accomplishment, photographing one so clearly is legendary!

Alchemy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3y (1 reply)

It is a great photo, please post more. Most of ours are shades and variations of a green base, but we have this one orange one that looks so wild.

WatermelonCalves@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3y

Thank you so much! I've only ever seen the green guys myself until this one came by. Definitely the most vibrant bird I've ever seen.
