How? SK needs the US for protection against China, doesn't it? What other choices do they have? I'm asking genuinely. I always thought they bet on their relationship with the US.

SK government can kiss Trump's ass as much they want, they will have trouble convincing private companies to invest in the US (which is a "problem" EU countries are also having in appeasing Trump), and even more trouble finding people dumb enough to go into the US to setup any of that investment.
