REMINDER: Check your NBN speeds after the weekend upgrade

The NBN upgrade went through over the weekend (see here: https://aussie.zone/post/23680848).

Some providers have switched plans over without customers having to do anything, but others might require you to select the new plan manually. (Those providers are no doubt banking on some people being unaware or forgetting to change - at least for a while - so they don't need to buy as much back-haul bandwidth.)

You will, of course, need a fibre connection to actually get these speeds.

I just run a speed test on my UniFi System on ABB FTTP. From 108 at 5:26am this morning to 545 this afternoon.

Note to Unifi users. I had enabled Smart Queues which left me at 100/16 until I discovered and disabled it. Had me stumped for 30min.

Also the traffic inspection stuff can do it, anything that disables the hardware offload function will tank the speed.

Not entirely true. HFC can do the higher speeds, albeit only up to 100mbit upstream.

Looks like I got upgraded for free - was on 1000/40 and am now getting over 80 upload:

I’d hope that’s usually enough to stream 4K videos haha

So glad I moved from a FTTP connected house to a Fixed Wireless serviced area. Not jealous at all.

Although I am setting higher than advertised download speeds, which I think may be due to having a 4th gen connection in an area where almost everyone I talk to is using 2nd gen and doesnt seem to understand why you would want to update.

FYI for anyone on Aussie broadband - it looks like if you were on the lower plans you didn’t automatically get upgraded, you need to manually change your plan - the 100 plans no longer exist, and the 500/50 plan is cheaper than the plan you’re currently on.

Odd, the 100/40 plan was the original speed tier, but the NBN got rid of it a while back and everybody should have been moved to 100/20. The NBN then re-introduced it of course, but it's relegated to "business" users, so it's behind the "Pro" selector with Aussie.

We're writing to let you know that, unfortunately, from your billing cycle in November 2020, we will need to migrate you from your current plan NBN 100Mbps/40Mbps Unlimited ($99.00) to NBN 100Mbps/20Mbps Unlimited ($99.00) for the same cost of $99.00

Whilst it is an upload decrease, the price will remain the same and your download speed will also remain the same.

It goes without saying that we did not want to do this, but due to increased costs and the current NBN wholesale pricing model we have been forced to choose between congestion or higher prices. For a more in-depth look into the reasons why we were forced into this decision, click here.

Something I’ve been wondering, since the area I’m in isn’t due for FTTP until at least next year, does FTTN see the connection go unshaped to whatever the line can handle? Or does it just stay at the old speeds.

I’m specifically thinking of uploads. Long story short; I went from 100/40 to 100/20 and while it’s not a big issue it has affected some of my home server stuff. If it went to 100/100 or something I’d be happy as a clam but I’m betting it’s the case where it’ll stay as 100/20.

Be careful.

I know on Exetel, the above does apply, ie new plan is cheaper and faster.

BUT, the new plan won't let you turn off CG-NAT, which may affect playing some games or other apps/services that you might use.

I was already on ultrafast, and never hit 50 during uploads in any case, so the upgrade hasn't made much difference to me
