Are the AC maps accurate, or are they a smaller/simpler/more playable area themed around the original place?

The game definitely wasn't accurate to the modern day layout...but, if I remember correctly, the game version is actually larger, or at least has more buildings than in real life.

Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town in Tuscany, located on a natural hillock, built by the Republic of Siena in 1214–19 as a front line defensive fortification in their wars against Florence.
