Not sure if it has been shared before, but Piefed now has a built-in instance chooser when you try to register, to help spread users across instances

Example: https://piefed.zip/auth/instance_chooser

For details on how the scores are calculated: https://chat.piefed.social/#narrow/channel/13-PieFed-Wiki-.26-Documentation/topic/.E2.9C.94.20Add.20section.20on.20instance.20chooser/near/5470

Would be nice to integrate fediseer into it and show endorsements

Any android app recommendations?

Do I need to make a piefed account or can I keep using my Lemmy account ? I know I can see piefed content from Lemmy, but am I missing something?

Skavau@piefed.social · 16 pts · 351d (4 replies)

You will need a new account on piefed. You are missing out on piefed features like flairs, hashtags, feeds but all piefed comms are federated with the major lemmy instances.

The apps are beginning to incorporate piefed functions, but there is a delay. I use just a browser for it right now on my phone. Its fine.

Thank you for the clear answers!

I’m on IOS but use Thunder which is cross platform, and it supports piefed now. So it should work on android too.

Thunder support for piefed is still on pre-release version, which is only available on github. Just to set expectations properly. 🙂

It sounds like Piefed is iterating quickly; it's probably hard to maintain third party apps.

You can find Apps that support piefed there : https://piefed.social/community/fediverse/wiki/piefed-app

I'm trying to catch up the missing info but it's not easy 🥲

Hello. I am the developer of Summit. I wonder why it says support for piefed is in beta on Summit 🤔. It's been available in release builds for a while now.

Snoopy@piefed.social · 6 pts · 350d (2 replies)

Sorry and thank for the info. I'm updating it.

Because when i added it, it was beta.

So sadly, it wasn't updated a while. it's hard to check everything, contact people, follow current progress and test it. I'm busy 😔

Mlem dev sent me their app update on zulip, so it made my job easier. There is lot work to do 😅

idunnololz@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 350d (1 reply)

Ah. Np. I wasn't sure if it was community maintained.

Thank you for updating it!

Snoopy@piefed.social · 5 pts · 350d

That's a good point. ☺️

Currently, the wiki is open to community mods & admins. So i'm the sole wiki editor.

The wiki could be open to :

  • trusted accounts
  • community members
  • any account

However, i can't check every wiki edits and revert their changes if needed. Thus,I prefer restricting it. Ideally, i would name some wiki editors.

I use Interstellar for piefed and I like it a lot.

clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 351d

Thank you.

For anyone who cares, I do not recommend Thunder at the moment for PieFed. It is my favorite Lemmy client and it is definitely the main way that I use both Lemmy/PieFed, but the PieFed support is currently in beta and buggy. But once PieFed support is in the official build, I expect it will be an easy recommendation from me. The beta is just not great for PieFed at the time of writing.

Noted.

I wish eternity supported piefed, it seems so nice but I don't want to switch clients

Caveman@piefed.social · 3 pts · 351d

Interstellar has been working pretty well for me.

Skiluros@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 350d (1 reply)

Pretty cool. Good to see this.

Although I am firm believer that instance selection should be algorithmic and pre-selected for the user (Canadian IPs get sent to Lemmy.ca etc) with an easy to change option for those who want to do a manual selection.

You want to limit any point that limits an individual from signing up.

This! A huge “yup” button and an option below “actually lemme see a bunch of options”.

Naw it yups for you and on the confirmation screen has an option to change actually. Minimal friction, maximum fediverse!

Super helpful to have!
