That's one of my favorite games of all time. Thematically, the first time you see this scene, it does a lot for the presentation and story. Gameplay wise, I think it's pretty weak.

dragnansia@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 307d (1 reply)

If my memory is correct the gameplay for this part is only a platformer, and I agree that pretty weak for this game.

tuckerm@feddit.online · 5 pts · 307d

I agree, but I think that says a lot about how good the atmosphere in this level was. Gameplay-wise, it really isn't as interesting as the rest of the game. And yet, everyone was talking about the Scarecrow parts back when this game came out, and it's still a memorable part of the game.

I think it helps that you won't die too many times at this part. If it was a platformer section and you had to keep replaying it, people would remember it negatively. (Kind of like how people always hate the puzzle sections in action games.) But instead, they gave this part a great presentation, and you can get through it fairly quickly, so the gameplay didn't really leave a bad taste in your mouth.

I think the thing I miss most about this game is how much it did with hardware from 2005. It looked great, played well, had a decent length but also didn't outstay its welcome.

I've played through it at least twice. I doubt I'll ever replay City or Knight as they were amazing but far far too long.

I liked Arkham City, it felt more like the game they initially wanted to make. Batmans movement is a bit smoother, you get some fun gliding elements, and it opens up the map so there is a bit more of an exploration/investigation element.

I think Arkham Knight might have gone too large, and I feel like the batmobile sections felt too tank like.

Flamekebab@piefed.social · 2 pts · 307d

They're definitely fun and I enjoyed them but knowing how long they are I wouldn't start them again. I had a similar thing with GTA IV!

Which Batman game is this from?

Rokin@leminal.space · 19 pts · 307d

Arkham Asylum

tuckerm@feddit.online · 10 pts · 307d (4 replies)

I love this version of Scarecrow, probably one of the best iterations of the character. Although he was creepy as hell in Arkham Knight, too.

Also...

The fake game crash totally got me when I first played this.

Your spoiler code didn't work.

tuckerm@feddit.online · 1 pts · 306d (1 reply)

Wait, really? I looked at it on the piefed instance I'm using and also on lemmy.world.

naun@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 305d

Hmm, I'm on Sync, so maybe it's an issue with the app. Although the other person who replied to you, their spoiler code did work.

::: spoiler spoiler The fake crash sent shivers down my spine even though a part of me knew it was just the scarecrow section fucking with me. :::

brillotti@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 307d (1 reply)

I thought that was a hunter from Destiny for a minute. Took me a while to see Batman.

not_so_handsome_jack@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 307d

You could definitely get Hunter fashion to look like this version of scarecrow. There's a couple of festival of the lost pieces that would make this easy.

Is this one of those BioShocks I keep hearing about

What, I heard they're really good games. I think you have to hide from Sliders or something though, and maybe it's in the sky? Or possibly in the ocean but it looks like there's a sky level

My favourite hedgehog

This game did blow my mind as well at this part. It was such a departure from the rest of the game.

calliope@retrolemmy.com · 2 pts · 307d

It’s one of my favorite sequences from any game!

Baggie@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 306d

Great set piece, mildly irritating execution

mintiefresh@piefed.social · 4 pts · 306d

I still remember playing this game a long time ago.

Honestly, what an amazing game and it still holds up today.

lazynooblet@lazysoci.al · 3 pts · 307d (4 replies)

Is it worth playing this now in 2025? It's on my "bought but never loaded" list

Honytawk@lemmy.zip · 8 pts · 306d

Played through them all recently.

The first one has aged a bit, and has a small map. The gameplay however is great and the story too. It aged really well because it has a distinct art style.

The next ones do everything the first one did, but better. Bigger map, more gadgets, longer story.

If you want to feel like Batman, I highly recommend.

nfreak@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 307d

Absolutely. Still holds up extremely well in every aspect.

newthrowaway20@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 306d

Yes yes yes.

Just went through the whole series the other month. Still holds up surprisingly well.

tuckerm@feddit.online · 2 pts · 307d

I bet it is. I haven't played it in a few years, although I just replayed the sequel -- Arkham City -- earlier this year and it was still great. Arkham City added quite a few game mechanics on top of Arkham Asylum, but I bet Asylum is still fun. Most people agree that Asylum had the best atmosphere, too.

Rokin@leminal.space · 3 pts · 307d

The whole game is amazing, but yes, I agree.

badbytes@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 306d

IK, it was such a new game mechanic, really enjoyed getting caught in that level. Hide and seek.

big_slap@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 307d

this is one of the best video games ever made.

FenrirIII@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 306d

That level made me sick. I couldn't finish it
