Sometimes sex is spontaneous, sometimes its a release that built up over hours of tension. In our more spontaneous moments, my partner and I typically have a small back and forth right before we start about what we're in the mood for. We usually just agree on a theme or mood, "Sweet and gentle", " Rough with praise" etc. How do you decide together in those moments how to proceed? Do you pause for a discussion, or do you just try and go with the flow?

With my ex we were both switches, which sometimes presented some challenges. We ended up making a "mood scale" on the fridge door with a magnet for each of us. Far right meant 100% dom, far left meant 100% sub, and right in the middle meant not in the mood right now.
We knew each other's likes, dislikes, limits, and always used the same safewords, so basically if our magnets were on opposite sides, it was easy for the dom to take control and start a scene. As for ideas for the scenes, we usually talked about them during aftercare. Being a switch, I love the playful revenge dynamic, "Next time you’re getting the same punishment you gave me, but way way worse 😈" and so on

Her idea that we tried. She was a princess being held captive by an evil king. I was a knight that would free her but she had to fuck me first. It was hilarious as she kept encouraging me to fuck her harder as my reward for setting her free. At one point I said, "is it true that your sister is also here being held captive"? Actual partner had a lot of kinks but didn't try most of them (exes were likely vanilla). I knew I had to go through a teaching phase were we had to discuss, explore and secure scenes. In the beginning I was like "do whatever you want, it can't be too much. Trust me with the safeword, I'll just go with the flow" and he came up with more and more extreme ideas
In the end we found ourselves very compatible, talking sex whenever we feel to (which happens a lot) and we've learned to know each other well enough to not cross the boundaries in exploration
