Sure, but realistically, we are unfortunately now in another “might makes right” geopolitical era without any ostensible veneer of equity or justice. Personally, I thought most of the developed world was moving past that, but it seems we are not, and that makes me sad.
The Monroe Doctrine, everyone in South America knows about it. It's the excuse to fuck around in everyone's business in the western hemisphere since 1823.

How can one country declare another country's airspace closed?
FilthyHands@sh.itjust.works · 37 pts · 271d
SAMs

What? Do you really think the US would enforce that by shooting down civilian airliners?
FilthyHands@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 270d
Without a doubt. It would get Hegseth so hard.

In 2025? Yes. And claim they were carrying drugs or some shit.
ByteJunk@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 271d
Yep. When you have two aircraft carriers in their airspace, you make the laws.
WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 271d
These aren't "laws". They're war crimes committed by a fascist regime.

That was issued 21 Nov. That's not in response to today's outburst.

Is "advised to exercise caution" language that means "closed"? Or is it as read by a layman
amateurcrastinator@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 271d
No no no, he DECLARED it! That's as good as a law or something right?
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 271d

Venezuela is a developing country, has the world's largest known oil reserves, and has been one of the world's leading exporters of oil.
Well that explains it
pacology@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 271d
Didn’t they nationalized all oil fields and kicked out all western companies like 10 years ago?
bystander@lemmy.ca · 12 pts · 270d
Looks like the "western companies" found a warmongering president to take it back for them.
theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 26 pts · 271d
Obvious imperialist warmongering is obvious.

My aunties all live there. Are they all going to die in a hellfire attack?
Typhoon@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 271d
No. They might get shot by occupation forces instead.
CircaV@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 270d
Given they are over 80 and blind I doubt that.
EvilHankVenture@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 270d
You have too much faith in occupying forces.
CircaV@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 270d
Not really. I know how brutal the US army can be, it’s just these are old people. Mostly housebound. I wonder if they will just burn.
