Would you still watch Supernatural if Sam and Dean were both women and sisters??

I probably would have watched it if the show was made like that originally, since I have no qualms with female-led shows, but if it came out now - post end of the show, it'd just feel like a low-effort genderbend to me.

If it was presented just like this ("Supernatural, but the MCs are women!"), I'd probably feel similarly to it as the Ghostbusters movie where they did the same. Ie, it sounds like a corporate attempt to make progressive dollars with what sounds like a lazy pandering rehash.

If you mean more as a concept, I think it could work. I mean, I think Buffy was pretty popular for a while.

but okay now what show is like this. asking for a friend. Set It Off 1996 is cool like this. Freaks of Science 1985 is cool like this but not all women- though a diverse cast. Generation X 1996 is also cool like this however not all women- again a diverse cast.

For it to work, they would've had to gender-bend their dad too, ngl. Even then, something would still feel off. The show is cemented in male themes. Yes, it has queer themes. Yes, it has found family themes... but the framing of the show is rooted in traditional masculinity(and toxic). It wouldn't resonate the same way with women MCs, especially for gay men.

I still would've watched it, though. I'd be curious to see how they'd change things for daughters trying to live up to their father's shadow (or their mother's shadow, for that matter).

But in my mind, it doesn't work the same way. I'm willing to admit that's probably because I lack the frame of reference. I don't know much about father-daughter relationships or how they differ from father-son relationships. For that reason alone, I'd want to watch it. It would have something interesting to say about a dynamic I don't know much about.

That said, historically, men haven't always written women particularly well, so we'd have to assume it would be a different show in a lot of ways. Hopefully one that doesn't fall into oversexualizing the MCs for the male gaze. When I think of a similar show with women MCs, I think of the original Charmed.

Sorry, my comment will sound acidic, but I would watch a "gender swapped" version AS LONG AS IT'S GOOD, unlike what Supernatural became after season 04 (not a fan, the IP got milked until it was so meaningless that OF COURSE IT COULD ONLY END UP LIKE A "let's battle god" SHŌNEN).

To me (speaking from a european point of view and as a writer), Supernatural is the perfect example of a particular problem with american IPs in general : as long as the IP is juicy in revenue, it'll get milked dryier than sand, even if it means degrading the IP in the process. A gender swap, or simply a change in protagonists (with some back and forth between teams or smthg) should have occured waaaaay earlier in the show. Some deaths and tragedies should have been permanent, simply to have meaning and depth, etc. OR : the show should have ended earlier, when it had good momentum to be definitive.

I think the people behind Supernatural made a way better writing and pacing job with The Boys, even if the ending of s03 was really weak. They did the good thing with Gen V, though. Diversifying the protagonists, and the novelty it brings while finding its way into the main story is great narrative management.

Another perfect example of a good genderswap is Fiona & Cake. Supernatural could benefit from that, it could even borrow some stuff from Buffy. It would just have to be good.

I would but not sure it would do as well. When it first started fantasy/scifi/horror was not as popular in general and moreso with males than females. I feel the idea was the show premise would get males and the pretty boys would draw in females.
