My local gym is crazy expensive and it's why i don't climb: ~$70/mo

pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 255d

Damn, yeah seems like my gym is the cheapest I can possibly find ($30/mo)

BussyCat@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 255d

Wish I had a climbing gym that was only 70/mo there are 3 gyms somewhat near me. They are 90, 97, and 116

iamericandre@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 255d

Gym membership is ~93 a month which is very high but we have two gyms with a third location opening next year so you are getting a lot for the money including free classes (yoga, weightlifting etc) at one of the locations.

Gear wise I buy a pair of shoes every 18 months or so. Scarpa vapor v, won’t wear anything else. Those are around 200. Plus a bag of chalk every so often so another few bucks.

I pay about 70€ a month for gym memberships, and maybe 50-100€ per year for shoes/resoling. Maybe add in 50-100€ per year for random gear, as I'm still building up my inventory

I have all the gear I'll need for a long time because I'm not trying to do new things, just enjoying climbing when I get to go.

The local bouldering gym allows you to buy entry passes in bulk, so I don't have a monthly fee.

pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 255d (1 reply)

The entry passes stack up like crazy though

vatlark@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 255d

Not with how often I climb :/

Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 253d (1 reply)

Bouldering
45€ on membership, and then maybe 30€ per year for resoling and 8€ per year for chalk. I have 2 pairs of identical shoes (scarpa instinct vs) that im pretty happy with, so i think the only thing i might get in the next year is some durable sport clothing (recommendations?)

Idk man, don't ask me, I just wear jeans and thick pants. Possibly stuff you wear hiking would be good?

lemonhead2@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 171d (3 replies)

this is our most expensive sport. kids climb for about 10h a week. i climb about 5h a week. and my wife about 1h a week.

memberships are $150 a month for both the adults. and $300 a month for the kids (includes training/coaching)

Sheeeeesh

lemonhead2@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 170d (1 reply)

i might have quoted monthly memberships too high. but I know if u include competitions and travel it's about 6k a year . (for 2 competitive climbers and 2 rec climbers)

pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 170d

Damn boi. I just got my $300/yr membership and chalk

iceberg314@midwest.social · 2 pts · 174d (4 replies)

My membership is like $70.

I think I added up all my gear a like 4 years ago and it was like $1200 for outdoor bouldering and top rope mainly. I think I'm going the have to retire my harness and ropes this year so that will be another ~$250 or so "maintenance cost"

pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 170d (3 replies)

I didn't now outdoor bouldering was so expensive

iceberg314@midwest.social · 3 pts · 170d (2 replies)

No, bouldering is pretty cheap! Like shoes, chalk, and a $200 mat and you're good to go!

It's all the caribiners ropes, nuts, slings, and cams that add up for outdoor top rope

pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 169d (1 reply)

Ah my brain seemed to have skipped the second half of that sentence mentioning top rope. Yeah, that's still a shocker for me though. A rope is a few hundred and I didn't realize nuts and slings were used

iceberg314@midwest.social · 2 pts · 168d

Yep for setting up the achor. You can probably get away with less, especially if there are a lot a trees near the top where tou set the anchor. But it all adds up eventually $30 here, $100 here..

BussyCat@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 255d

$90/mo for membership $150 shoes/ 24 months Chalk 10/yr With gas it’s probably just over $100/mo

blarghly@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 255d

Couldn't possibly say. I pretty consistently end up buying gear off marketplace, and then tack on the cost of gas, etc to get outside. But I have a moonboard in my garage, so no gym membership
