That's cool, give up the Epstein files

SirEDCaLot@lemmy.today · 48 pts · 237d (21 replies)

American here. I'm sure annexing Greenland would be very useful to us for all kinds of reasons. I don't want to do it.

Unless the people in Greenland want to become part of the United States, I don't believe we have any more right to declare Greenland ours than Hitler had a right to declare France his, or Russia has a right to declare Ukraine theirs.

If the people of Greenland want to become part of the United States, verified with an election monitored by multiple disinterested third parties, then by all means welcome to the party guys.

However given the timing of this ridiculous idea, I can't help but think the whole thing is just a distraction from the Epstein files.

Americans also need to have a referendum to allow Greenland to join and Denmark needs to have a referendum to let them go as well, if it is too be all above board, as Greenland is subject to the Danish government.

explodicle@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 236d

The fact that Denmark would likely respect the Greenlandic vote is proof that they shouldn't leave.

llothar@lemmy.ml · 9 pts · 237d

That's a very slippery slope. I am sure there are parts of Latvia that would happily join Russia. Or parts of US that would like to cede from the union. This is all but easy.

demonsword@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 236d (6 replies)

Unless the people in California want to secede from the United States

I wonder how you USians would respond to that.

explodicle@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 236d (2 replies)

Californian here, I'd vote yes.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 236d

As a Califorgreenlandian, i ratify the change that apparently just got voted in.

BreadstickNinja@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 234d

Oregonian here. Pretty sure we'd come along. I haven't asked Washington, but I assume they're in too.

SirEDCaLot@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 236d (2 replies)

Given that it is a part of our mainland continent, I would be less enthusiastic than if, say, Hawaii or Alaska wanted to secede.

Nonetheless, self-determination is a solidly American value. If an overwhelming majority of Californians wanted to leave the union, then in general I believe the rest of the country should let them. Otherwise we are forcing them to be subject to a national government they don't want.

demonsword@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 236d (1 reply)

I really, really doubt it would be as peaceful as you say it would be

SirEDCaLot@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 234d

I doubt it very much also. But I am saying in concept, if the vast majority of the people in one place don't want to be a part of the country they are part of, in general they should be allowed to leave.

GojuRyu@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 236d (1 reply)

There has been leaks that US intelligence are making moves to influence the greenlandic people using intelligence gathering to find pro secession and US elements in greenland. Any talk of the possibility of greenland joining the US as a real possibility only legitimizes an eventual takeover. Greenland has made it clear that they are not interested and that such talk is an insult and a threat to their sovereignty and self governance, current and future. I don’t think you mean to promote Trumps talking points, so this is just meant to let you know that it indirectly does.

SirEDCaLot@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 234d

Pro succession movement in Greenland? I very much doubt it. They can influence all they want, and if they are that only shows imho that they fundamentally misunderstand how other countries work.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 237d (2 replies)

Yeah, if we really need anything from it we should work with the Greenlandic people and the Danes to find a mutually agreeable solution. Annexing territories of allies is evil and fucking stupid.

Rothe@piefed.social · 9 pts · 237d

A mutual solution to the problem the US created and which didn't exist before Trump.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 236d

Solution to what?

Rothe@piefed.social · 5 pts · 237d (1 reply)

SirEDCaLot@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 234d

You think I am actually advocating for this nonsense?

Paragone@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 234d

He's committed to his imperial continent-kingdom:

His intent to annex Canada's real.

WITH Alaska AND Greenland, he can kill all ships bringing supplies to Canada..

He's going to be waging war on 3 fronts: northward, Civil War Part2, & southward, once he "de-naturalizes" all non-Republicans, converting all outside his cult into "illegals"..

His enmity against NATO has been visible for over a decade, btw..

https://www.lee.senate.gov/2025/6/lee-introduces-withdrawal-from-nato is independent of Trump, but it does communicate that NATO isn't safe, now..

Can't we just fly Trump to a random ice covered rock and just hire some people to pretend it is Greenland and he can have a little senior assisted living situation inside Trump Castle in Newer New York City, Greenland safely isolated from the rest of us?

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 237d (9 replies)

Surely he can't tell the difference between northern Alaska and Greenland

supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz · 6 pts · 237d (1 reply)

Aksala-Dnalneerg is the resource rich border region in the far tundras of the north between Alaska and Greenland, it is largely undeveloped because no real estate developer has had the proper vision for it yet (a great flat low expanse with easy access to water).

Paragone@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 234d

The tundra between Alaska & Greenland is Canada's territory, Nunavut.

He's already declared his intent to annex Canada: he's imperial, not civil-rights, & like Putin, imperial-greed is "blood"..

I say we fire him into the sun. A little extra helium and his intestinal discard for brains won’t hurt anything there- and I’d rather him not remain on this planet any longer than is necessary.

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 236d

You know, I have had this thought nearly verbatim.

Zron@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 236d (3 replies)

It’s actually really expensive to get things to the sun.

The easiest ice covered rock to get to from earth would be Europa. He might also confuse it with Greenland as an added bonus.

Paragone@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 234d

Trump intends to completely cut-off Canada's trade, Alaska, Pacific, mainland, Atlantic, Greenland ( a base ), so that he can butcher Canada, & successfully annex it, just like Putin wants Ukraina: for subjugated possession.

He isn't joking about his "Department of War":

He'll be waging war on 3 fronts: northward, enforcing his annexing of Canada,

Civil War Part2, once he "de-naturalizes" all non-Republicans, making everybody not in his cult into illegals,

AND war to the south, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, etc, as his imperialism "needs" to be doing..

The only obstacle left is the portion of his brain which fights-against absolute-psychopathy, & when that portion of his brain fails, in a "stroke", if the psychopathy wins, the ocean-of-blood begins spilling.

Prep.

Tell me you're slacking off at your day job without telling me you're slacking off at your day job:

Landry, in a post on X, thanked Trump: "It's an honor to serve ... in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!"

Yes this is a distraction - but we also need to remind ourselves that this shit isn't normal even if it weren't a distraction.

In the middle of the Clinton blow job scandal, Bill didn't go off saying New Brunswick needed to become a state to secure our national supply of bowling balls or some shit.

Trump can be making a distraction and also moving the Overton Window at the same time.

Paragone@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 234d

Excellent concept!

theneverfox@pawb.social · 4 pts · 236d (2 replies)

You'd think so, but no. Project 2025 can be traced back through the heritage foundation to the Technocracy movement, which was a bunch of proto-tech bros like Elon's Grandpa

They thought they were the smartest little guys and so they should control all aspects of society. They wanted to carve the world up into economic zones, and they wanted America's to be from the Panama canal to the artic, including Greenland, so they could control shipping through the artic and across the Atlantic

They were really big about shipping lanes, which is why South Africa randomly comes up too

Paragone@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 234d (1 reply)

I hadn't known about that angle, thank you!

The imperialism in it, though, .. incompatible with civil-rights, obviously..

_ /\ _

theneverfox@pawb.social · 2 pts · 234d

Oh trust me, it gets so much worse than the imperialism...

Their plan was basically like "what if tech-bros min-maxed absolutely everything, North Korea style?"
