Why is the simplified character (barely) more detailed than traditional?

I mean there isn't much to simplify until it would look too different and unrecognizable.
Fun fact: the PRC government tried to do a second round of simplification, but it didn't go through because the characters became too ugly.
I looked at some of the 2nd-simplified characters and it looked so weird, started to look partially like it got japanese kana mixed in lol
