Mods shouldn't delete unpopular opinions just because they're controversial

Isn't that very literally the point of the sub?

I know they banned an anti-vaxxer who only joined to post misinformation. I’m fine with that. That’s not an unpopular opinion. That’s an attempt to harm others and that shouldn’t be tolerated. I don’t really care either way, I just blocked the user.

Bad science isn't an opinion.

Depends. Was it right wing hatred posing as “controversy”? Thats usually what it is when someone is here whining loudly about it, in my experience.

presoak@lazysoci.al · -7 pts · 242d (1 reply)

Does your judgment hold precedence over theirs?

CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 241d

My judgement here starts and ends with an upvote or downvote, since I'm not a mod, so I don't know what you're barking about.

Ledivin@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 242d (2 replies)

So you're saying it was unpopular, but somehow not relevant to the sub?

6nk06@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 241d (1 reply)

In that case, whining is not an opinion.

Downvote because this is a popular opinion.

Ledivin@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 242d (1 reply)

Totally fair, but also important because the people running the community don't appear care about that aspect.

Some “unpopular” opinions are blatant misinformation propaganda, or bad attempts to troll people. Mods absolutely should remove this trash.

socsa@piefed.social · 10 pts · 241d

It's the paradox of these subs. 50% of the posts reduce to "people think I'm an asshole but I dont agree with them." Another 40% are just agenda posting trolls.

The rare 10% or so which aren't just cringe misanthrope or barely disguised bigotry are uninteresting. "I don't think Steak is very good." Cool story. "Being a parent isn't impressive." Sure but who cares? That's why these subs are just destined to be dumb.

wesker@lemmy.sdf.org · 4 pts · 242d

This sub as well as the Shower Thoughts one are often over-moderated, in my experience. I believe people actually report posts that they don't think qualify for whatever dumb personal reason, and then mods cave.

ccunning@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 241d

As long as the post is within the community’s rules, I think agree.

There is no maturity/sanity/intelligence test for becoming a moderator. Your sensible arguments hold no power.

reason: this is technically against some rules

Very well-defined reason 🙄 and to be clear, this wasn't my post or anything. I was arguing against it until the entire post mysteriously disappeared

RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com · 1 pts · 241d (3 replies)

Can you tell us what it was

Ledivin@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 241d (2 replies)

The OP thought furries are weird and appeal to pedophiles. Primary arguments were that they're often animation-based, which makes it for children (lol), but that furry culture is pretty hard-tied to yiff.

There were one or two fair points but it was mostly just ignorant/misguided points. I don't think that's in any way basis for removal, especially not in this comm.

BassTurd@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 241d

Not having seen the OG post and going solely off what you've said, that post to me falls in the grey area of someone who is misguided but maybe could get various opinions in a post, and someone who is abusing a conversational platform to spread hate. I do think at least a minimal amount of review on the comments should be a part in deciding if a topic is inappropriate for the forum, but sometimes it doesn't matter and the topic doesn't belong in this community.

If someone came in and claimed that the Nazi party should be in power because all Jews are evil, that should be removed. There is no positive conversation that can come from that, and a user will just use it to talk hate speech. There's a line between bad unpopular opinion and hate speech, and usually the latter is what gets removed.

RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com · 2 pts · 241d

Yeah I agree with you then. The dude was just being stupid and mean to a group of people he clearly doesn't understand.
