Coupang e-commerece announces $1.18 billion compensation to South Korean users for data leak

South Korean e-commerce company Coupang (CPNG.N), opens new tab announced on Monday a compensation deal worth 1.69 trillion won ($1.18 billion) to holders of 33.7 million accounts for a massive data leak that triggered a backlash from users and lawmakers.

Coupang said customers will get company vouchers of 50,000 won (35 usd) each.

We've seen awful practices in data breach compensation but this feels like satire

  • 50,000 won vouchers
  • 5,000 for food delivery
  • 20,000 only for tour packages that no one even knew it existed
  • 20,000 only for luxury shit that 99% costs more than 100,000
  • 5,000 for normal, actual shit people would use Coupang for.
