Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville was referring to Mamdani's swearing-in on a Quran. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has documented a history of anti-Muslim statements from him.
Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville from Alabama posted on social media: "The enemy is inside the gates" upon learning that Zohran Mamdani became the first mayor of New York City to be sworn in using a Quran.
The Quran is the primary religious text of Islam, akin to the Christian Bible. Mamdani is the first Muslim mayor of New York, the nation's largest city.
Tuberville, a conservative football coach-turned-politician, has a history of making anti-Muslim statements, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR.

Tuberville is such a stereotypical redneck moron... Just looking into his eyes makes you feel like you're looking at a 15W light bulb in an empty fridge.
whotookkarl@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 13 pts · 242d
He's not just a moron with no relevant education, he's also an actively evil racist who defrauded investors for millions, refused to do his job in the senate, uses the Tuberville foundation to laundry money and bribes, backed the Trump insurrection attempt, voted against same sex marriage legislation in 2022, and sponsors anti trans legislation.
He's the human equivalent of a ham and mayonnaise sandwich in a kkk hood.

If Tuberville is against it, there's a near 100% change this is good for average working people and bad for billionares.
RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 241d
If Tuberville said it, and it’s not about football, there is a 100% chance it is complete blithering.

Why do we talk about Alabama like it's a serious place?
VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 36 pts · 242d
Alabama is rated at the top for businesses to move in, because they openly fuck over their citizens. They're rated at the bottom 5 for quality of life and healthcare. 1 in 5 kids in Alabama live in poverty. They have the highest in infant mortality rate, higher than most countries.
Also high crime areas. Not to mention they continue to cut the budget for their environmental funding.
Alabama is pretty much a pro-business, anti-life state.

Can't believe that my senator is this fucking stupid. A walking stereotype. Hopefully he loses the race for governor. If he wins, he might even manage to be worse than Ivey.
AquaTofana@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 242d
Ive never lived in Alabama, but as a woman in the military who was around for the damage he did weaponizing a pro-life rhetoric, I'm so sorry for you.
I really dont believe he's dumb. I believe he's straight up evil and thats so much worse. I also hope he doesnt win governorship of Alabama. Good luck out there my friend!
FerretyFever0@fedia.io · 8 pts · 242d
Yeah. Pretty sure a decent chunk of the reason he won was because of his record as a fucking college football coach. Not sure how that was supposed to transfer over to skill in politics, but it's what the people wanted. Alabama is pretty backwards in most ways. He does seem rather evil, but he also seems rather unintelligent, don't think he's ever come up with his own talking point or dogwhistle.
Ach@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 242d
I can definitely believe a senator from Alabama is this stupid.

Heyyy, a fellow Alabamian.
Yeah we're looking to get out before the governor race starts. Tuberville is somehow worse than grandma.
FerretyFever0@fedia.io · 2 pts · 241d
Best of luck. Shame I won't be able to. Hoping to leave the country soon enough.
VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 241d
If I may ask, whereabout are you looking to go?
We were originally looking to leave the country, but the housing crisis in Canada is atrocious and the UK is TERF island. Now we're looking at Colorado due to their governor really sticking it to Trump. Though I am worried he may be ousted next year....
FerretyFever0@fedia.io · 2 pts · 241d
Possibly Ireland or New Zealand. Haven't looked into it too much to be honest. Anywhere where people speak English and I probably won't be shot or bothering any of the people that already live there. Australia is probably half decent in some places. I would definitely avoid the UK though, they're almost as bad as the US in a lot of ways.

Apart from this Alabama douche being an asshole, the concept of swearing on a book of fables needs to go away.
But, it's always funny to me when Christians and Muslims fight over their religions, it's like two 3 year olds arguing which power ranger is more powerful....

Let's face it, the enemy is, in fact inside the gates. It's painted orange, and it's shitting its pants whilst sitting in the whitehouse fantasizing about little girls (when not in a dementia fever dream).

If he keeps to his Oath, he can swear on whatever book he wants.
Maybe that is why US politicians lie so much, the bible is the problem /s
Personally if I ever need to take an oath, I am doing it on a copy of the 7 tenets of the Satanic Temple.
That or Small Gods by Terry Pratchett.
greybeard@feddit.online · 6 pts · 242d
If I'm ever sworn in to something, I want it to be on a VHS recorded copy of the "Drumhead" episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. If that isn't available, "Measure of a Man" is also acceptable.

When we swore an oath to protect The Constitution upon enlistment in the military, we didn't use anything. Probably a good idea since I doubt that every MEPS branch wants to have several hundred holy books on hand, JIC.

Biblical narratives in the Quran
hopesdead@startrek.website · 4 pts · 242d
I had a sociology teacher that is Muslim rant about (circa 2010) prejudices relating to how violent the text in the Quran is. Argued that the book should be re-written. However this was also a person who argued that schools should swap teachers and force them to grade each other’s test.
Then I took a class on religions in North America and learned that teacher had a history of getting Muslim students who they claimed learned more about their own faith practices in that class than before they had been enrolled.

It is certainly empowering them. Same way Islam is empowering Iran and Christianity is empowering the far right in America.
There are peaceful people despite those religions, but not because of them. Our peaceful and cooperative nature comes from our biology and societies.
SulaymanF@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 241d
That’s simply false. I’m a practicing Muslim and I’m peaceful because of my religion and not despite it. My religion pushes me to be more patient with people and respect people who probably don’t deserve it.
Claiming that Muslims are peaceful despite their religion is a profoundly ignorant take. Talk to any kid in Sunday school if you don’t believe me. Islam has the same root word in Arabic as “peace.”
SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 240d
All social animals demonstrate the capacity and preference formorality. 6 month old toddlers demonstrate it before even understanding religion and complex language.
You are peaceful because of our biological social programming and evolution selecting for it over thousands of generations, not because rules written down in a book by some person.
Only humans commit violence in the name of religion. Its not the only reason, but its a very common one. Its a very effective way to reprogram our inherit morality and to get good people to think that bad things are good.
