For those too young to remember, America had 4 TV stations (including PBS). The news anchor one listened to was the man the viewer felt was most trustworthy, and by trustworthy I mean unbiased. Every anchor reported basically the same news, because they only reported facts. Being seen to pick sides or editorialize was anathema to the audience.
Imagine Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings or Dan Rather saying something this fucking stupid with a straight face. Their "trust" polling and ratings would fall through the floor.
Also, journalists used to hunt politicians for sport. After Watergate everyone wanted the next big trophy. Course, politicians used to at least pretend to have shame, and this is really gonna bake your noodle, voters would curb stomp them.
