FOSS Day One Journal Alternative

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good open source journaling app that can rival Day One Journal?

I'm looking for something end-to-end encrypted—I know Day One claims to be E2E, but I'm not sure I trust it.

I use Joplin for my general note taking, but It's not really a suitable alternative for journaling.

Not true FOSS but AnyType might fit your requirements?

I was just thinking about trying Joplin for Journaling. Why doesn't it suit you?

I’ve given it a second try. I guess I just see Joplin as primarily suited for a note taking app.

I was used to journal specific features like a calendar view, on this day, etc, which really helped with reflecting on changes and themes over time.

But, I really don’t know what data is being collected and shared with Day One or how secure it’s E2EE is. So, the trade-off switching to Joplin is probably worth it for me at this point.

Thank you! I'm just getting started with journaling and still have to figure out what I want and need.

Of course! I’m probably just being picky 😂. I got used to more fancy features of an app made specifically for journaling. But so far, I’m not missing them tooo much haha.

By the way, if you don't mind self-hosting, Journiv could be an alternative. I really like it, but don't have time to figure out how to host it right now. 😅

That’s starting to look like something I want! I’ll definitely experiment with it. But, like you said, managing a self-host thing would take more effort. I’d also want a mobile app since I tend to write down smaller thoughts when I’m away from my computer. But this is a good start! Thanks for the share 😎
