full transcript:
Epstein asked to call during a fundraiser. My notes say that I tried to explain AI alignment principles and difficulty to him (presumably in the same way I always would) and that he did not seem to be getting it very much. Others at MIRI say (I do not remember myself / have not myself checked the records) that Epstein then offered MIRI $300K; which made it worth MIRI's while to figure out whether Epstein was an actual bad guy versus random witchhunted guy, and ask if there was a reasonable path to accepting his donations causing harm; and the upshot was that MIRI decided not to take donations from him. I think/recall that it did not seem worthwhile to do a whole diligence thing about this Epstein guy before we knew whether he was offering significant funding in the first place, and then he did, and then MIRI people looked further, and then (I am told) MIRI turned him down.
Epstein threw money at quite a lot of scientists and I expect a majority of them did not have a clue. It's not standard practice among nonprofits to run diligence on donors, and in fact I don't think it should be. Diligence is costly in executive attention, it is relatively rare that a major donor is using your acceptance of donations to get social cover for an island-based extortion operation, and this kind of scrutiny is more efficiently centralized by having professional law enforcement do it than by distributing it across thousands of nonprofits.
In 2009, MIRI (then SIAI) was a fiscal sponsor for an open-source project (that is, we extended our nonprofit status to the project, so they could accept donations on a tax-exempt basis, having determined ourselves that their purpose was a charitable one related to our mission) and they got $50K from Epstein. Nobody at SIAI noticed the name, and since it wasn't a donation aimed at SIAI itself, we did not run major-donor relations about it.
This reply has not been approved by MIRI / carefully fact-checked, it is just off the top of my own head.

Maybe Jeffrey Epstein offered us a large sum of money, maybe he didn't. I'm not sure and I will make a public statement without bothering to check with anyone. We keep getting large donations so often it's easy to forget whether we did or did not receive an offer of three hundred thousand dollars from the random nobody called Jeffrey Epstein. What I do remember is that whether we got the offer or not (not that I can remember if we did) we certainly looked into whether he was a bad guy or not, even though it's not standard practice and I don't we should have to do so either. In any case we looked into him and maybe turned down the offer he may or may not have made. Probably. Again, I'm making this statement without checking with anyone who knows for sure but I heard someone say something to that effect. Later we took a fifty thousand dollar donation from him anyway, but that's such a small sum we barely even noticed it.
I assume my lawyer would advise me to keep posting things like this (I have not checked myself).

This was in October 2016, eight years after Epstein was convicted of soliciting sexual services from girls as young as 14. MIRI spent 2014 and 2015 fighting and eventually setting with a former staffer who accused board members of statutory rape. Their legal expenses in those years were around $250k, similar to the money Yud says Epstein offered. So Yudkowsky was very familiar with the concept of older men seeking sex from underage girls and the risks of associating MIRI with it at the time. I don't remember the exact timeline of Brent Dill's Bay Area phase but that would have left Yud very familiar with another case where an older man abused younger women and girls.
The original email thread includes this exchange:
The phrase "worth MIRI’s while to figure out whether Epstein was an actual bad guy versus random witchhunted guy" sounds like Yud has been listening to Scott Alexander and Scott Aaronson about how rich or educated white men are the real victims and hos be liars. It sounds like he was familiar with the substance of the accusations and thought there was a good chance they were untrue and not the tip of the iceberg.

I was going to say that I had looked up Scott Aaronson in the files, and my conclusion overall was that nothing in them actually made him look worse than anyone already sees him. Joscha Bach name-dropped him as an interesting person (so what, really). Aaronson and Seth Lloyd each met with somebody who was working for Epstein (Charles Harper), at which there was some talk of making a "Cryptology in Nature" conference happen. As far as I could tell, that conference never did happen. It wasn't even evident from Harper's e-mails that Epstein had even been named at or before the meeting. I don't think Aaronson could be blamed for having a business lunch with somebody who had been a big wheel at a private foundation (Templeton, in Harper's case) and who said he could get private-foundation funding for a meeting in Aaronson's subject area.
And then Scott Aaronson had to go and write a blog post about his being in the Epstein files. Short version: He says he had lunch with Harper, after which Harper wrote him a follow-up that named Epstein "for the first time", and then he ignored Harper after hearing about Epstein's conviction. That sounds consistent with the "no real harm, no real foul" impression that I would have been willing to endorse after searching the e-mails myself. But then the epilogue! Scott comments on his own post:
Meanwhile, in 2019:
I dunno, Scott. Maybe you should find better friends.

Its not an original observation, but some people can't imagine moral courage. They think everyone is on the make and the only difference is between brave and cautious.

EA in general has this problem where they let rich people use their "charities" for social cover. It is part of how the FTX scandal was made possible and it is a contributing factor to how and why they keep getting played by the LLM companies.

For someone who calls himself "genre savy" I have to ask why Eliezer and the EAs/rationalists keep getting played
prw@mastodon.sdf.org · 7 pts · 187d
@lurker Well, you see, he's GENRE savvy, not practical-applications-of-sensible-thought savvy ...

He clearly needs to read less fantasy/sci-fi and more leftist theory.

you see, the problem with Epstein was that maybe he made some sparkly elites feel unsafe after the fact, you see. maybe all those fourteen year olds should have just known better, dontcha think?
bitofhope@awful.systems · 12 pts · 188d
Jeffrey Epstein? The New York extortionist?
scruiser@awful.systems · 10 pts · 188d
Yeah it is yet another telling detail that that is the part Eliezer emphasizes and not the child rape.
Amoeba_Girl@awful.systems · 4 pts · 187d
Huh. I don't like to look into Epstein stuff too much because it's such a mess of creepy speculation, I know there are "recordings" but is it actually established that he used them for extortion? Compared to like, the very well documented sex crimes?
Architeuthis@awful.systems · 11 pts · 187d
Not really. It's a narrative that took hold early on to explain where the hell he got all that money without being connected to a visible business, and why he got a slap on the wrist the first time he was found guilty of pimping minors and being a child molester.
It's certainly looking more and more like it was mostly a case of strong class solidarity among the ultra rich than him having had to force the issue.
Amoeba_Girl@awful.systems · 8 pts · 187d
Ugh, yeah, as I though then. Eliezer going for the conspiracy theory to euphemise the real abuse is a perfect illustration of why I really really can't stand the general discourse around the Epstein files.

As for who should "run diligence on donors", a random epidemiologist on BlueSky has a "no money from bastards" policy for his lab. This is the sort of thing Yudkowsky could have learned if he got a Master's degree rather than just attending the occasional conference.

Over on Old!SneerClub, Dembara asked Yud what he would do if he learned that a mature adult was grooming fourteen-year-olds into sex. Yud says he would tell nobody outside the community. The r/HPMOR editors erased the exchange but its still available under the two usernames.
I hope he gets a chance to talk to Cardinal Pell about how well that response to sexual abuse works. A million years should do it.

He is following up with thoughts on how sometimes someone pleads guilty of a crime they did not commit: edit link
All I will say is that the rules for felony conviction are stricter than the rules for "you sound creepy, we decline your invitation." And that this experience is one I will draw on going forward when setting community norms to discourage abuse.
Edit: Isn't Dath Ilan the setting of the Project Wonderful glowfic? The setting where people with good genes get more breeding licenses than people with bad genes?
scruiser@awful.systems · 10 pts · 186d
Yep, Project Lawful. dath ilan is Eliezer's "utopian" world the isekai'd protagonist is from. It is described in dath ilan that if you have "bad" genes you lost your UBI if you had kids anyway (it was technically Gregorist-style citizen's dividend, but it basically UBI) and if you had "good" genes you got extra payment for having more kids.
Eliezer is basically saying unless the government meets the "standards" of his made up fantasy "utopia" he won't cooperate with it, even in prosecuting literal child raping pedophiles or carrying out social repercussions against said child rapists.

is it just me or is this the laziest possible way to say you're a sovereign citizen
scruiser@awful.systems · 3 pts · 183d
Sovereign citizens think their made up procedures or words will actually let them bypass the law. Whereas I think Eliezer would fold to actual pressure from the government (despite all his talk about game theory and ignoring threat-like incentives he would in fact want to avoid going to jail). At least, that is the vibes I've gotten from seeing his absolute refusal to suggest non-governmental direct action to stop the AI doom he is so certain is coming.

scruiser@awful.systems · 11 pts · 186d
The only people I know of that like to self-label as "classical liberals" tend to be Scott Alexander types trying to mask or downplay how right-wing/conservative they are.

yeah I saw that post. really, really uncomfortable implications behind the 'victimful crime' stuff and only taking action after repeated offences. It's straight up what big megachurches and other institutions do when they find out one of their top dogs has been grooming kids. no cops or reporters, just quietly expel them from the group
also, they erased the exchange? that is really not a good look

update to this thread, Yud says he does not agree with the positions as Dembara stated them the post also got taken down by the OP apparently.

For reference the open-source project appears to be OpenCog, founded by "Ben Goertzel" who at least up until 2010 held the title of "Director of Research" at SIAI, the relation stopping because he wasn't a true believer in doom.
fiat_lux@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 188d
Goertzel, you say? That makes this part of the statement interesting:
Goertzel specifically asked for funds first, $2k for video editing and personally thanked Epstein for the 50k too
fiat_lux@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 188d
Actually, just because the document is not awesomely formatted, and because mentioning the thanking part undersells the contradiction:

Over on Reddit, somewhatmorenumerous has been looking into Form 990 for the 2009 Epstein donation. Yudkowsky says:
The Epstein files say the recipient was someone called Ben Goertzel with a project named OpenCog or something like that. somewhatmorenumerous has doubts:
SIAI's 2009 Accomplishments lists Ben Goertzel as an employee.
I don't think this is as serious as telling the Internet you would cover up a mature adult in your organization having sex with multiple minors, but inaccurate tax paperwork can cost you your nonprofit status.

One more quote. Three years ago, Charlotte Alter investigated sexual harassment in the Effective Altruism movement (a movent which formed around Yudkowsky's mailing lists and blogs) for Time magazine.
A necessary but not sufficient response to stories like that is to make it utterly clear that this kind of behavior is not tolerated in your community and that you will take complaints of sexual harassment very seriously. Three years later, Yudkowsky is still blathering about how statutory rape is not always wrong and its important not to move too quickly to judgement.
Edit: See also this response by a professor who was asked why he had asked Epstein to fund a 2016 conference on sexual consent and campus rape.
The professor left Austin TX on retirement and now lives in California.
lurker@awful.systems · 8 pts · 179d
what is with the "uhm actually its ephebophilia and not pedophilia" thing?? (Yud's done it too in a weird ass post that was highlighted here) you're still having sex with someone who is still legally considered a child as a middle-aged man. jesus
CinnasVerses@awful.systems · 7 pts · 179d
Outside academic psychiatry papers, distinguishing pedophilia from ephebophilia is a setup to arguing that it should be socially and legally acceptable for mature adults to have sex with anyone who has completed puberty (or at least that desire to do this is natural- naturalistic fallacy).
Anyone familiar with trials of sex abusers has heard "I was just educating them with my penis! As Plato explains in the Symposium ..."
Architeuthis@awful.systems · 5 pts · 179d
It means sexual crimes are OK as long as there are no kindergartners involved.
It's also sea-lioning, because it assumes that unless you have, on you, at all times, documented receipts about what 'as young as 14' means, maybe you are just out to bad mouth noted philantrhopist and patron of the sciences J. E. Epstein and the people who liked having him around.
