Seems lemmynsfw is probably gone forever

It appears the lemmynsfw is gone.

There were only two people involved with the server, and only one of them had the keys and even the most basic information about the hosting. That person has been MIA since October.

Given that only a single person had any access and knowledge of the infrastructure means that this was inevitable.

Unless the guy died and we just don't know about it, I feel like there's still hope of getting this resolved. There's got to be some way of getting in touch with him.

SarahFromOz@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 192d (1 reply)

I hope so. There were some great people on that server

MastKalandar@feddit.online · 1 pts · 120d

I second the opinion.

But I was told DeCeNtRaLiZaTiOn would solve all our problems and nothing bad would ever happen?

Wolfizen@pawb.social · 19 pts · 193d (1 reply)

Lemmy is still here yes? You're commenting on a Lemmy post and reaching other Lemmy users. That is what decentralisation solves. If it was centralized this would mean the end for Lemmy.

Rengoku@lemmy.zip · -3 pts · 192d

Decentralization does not solve the issues of this specific server going down and making many contents inaccessible.

jjjalljs@ttrpg.network · 17 pts · 193d

No you weren't. Not by anyone credible, anyway.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 5 pts · 193d

It solves the problem of "where do we go now that [X] is fucked up?"

Anyone with the means can make a LemmyNSFW2.0 and carry on after hitting this bump in the road.

If it was a proprietary privately owned site, you would have to do a lot more to duplicate it.

This is less like Reddit going down and more like a single, specific page on Reddit not opening correctly.

Upvoting with my comment too. This is the third time this has happened with a major site. I mean, yeah, nice to have a thing, but not so nice for it to go dark overnight

This isn't a problem federation is supposed to solve, what are you two talking about?

chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 193d

I feel like there should be a way to enable instances to be forked in the event that something happens to it.

lol_idk@piefed.social · 1 pts · 193d

Not a problem with federation, a problem with decentralization

monkeyjoe@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 193d

Who said that? Give us names. We'll wait.
