The thing is, China has little oil of their own, so a push into wind, solar and electric vehicles helps their strategic independence. The US has plenty, and enough entrenched interests to keep pushing ahead on 20th century technology.

Interesting, I didn't know China had little oil. I would have guessed that it was just a pragmatic business decision from China ("there will be global demand for green tech, so let's serve that demand"), whereas Trump and his administration are too ideological to make sensible, pragmatic decisions
