I luckily saw this photo before I saw the original video somehow. It was still hella fuckin' sad and made my heart break, but if I had seen the original first I would have been bawling.
Instead I was like "Don't worry Punch! Your adoptive family is otw Little Guy!"
Zoos are gross and inhumane. This is type of behavior happens when animals are kept in captivity and it's really gross to portray the zoo as the "nice" party for giving a 10€ plush as a replacement mom.
I am no fan of zoos, but this behavior happens in the wild as well, when the mother is stressed, inexperienced, and/or lacks social support. Nature can be really fucking cruel and inhumane. Many and more animal babies die of starvation before they can get through their first few days... some species it's actually more common than successful parentage.
Not us, but them. Humanity is absolutely devastating to like, all ecosystems. Like capitalism, we will hunt until extinction, as has happened in the past.
Not all zoos are good zoos, again, perfection is impossible; we are not a hivemind. Zoos allow us to study and conserve in a way that is both self-sustainable and hopefully, a little comfortable and social.
The best case scenario would be conservation through National Parks and protected wild land. Even that has to be protected from poachers by like, real military folk sometimes.
We don't live in a perfect world, so we have to do the best we can with what we got until we can make it a better world.

Modern culture has completely ruined the lightheaded nature of that sentence for me...

I don't have the link right now, but I saw yesterday (with picture confirmation) that an adult had finally groomed and hugged this little guy.
Edit: Here's some video of him getting groomed. https://www.newsflare.com/video/839672/baby-monkey-punch-being-groomed-by-elder-monkeys

That poor baby 😠I can’t imagine the restraint it must take not to constantly snuggle the lil guy. Rooting for him though 🩵

This is so god damn sad

Unfortunately lots of animals just decide their kid sucks and ditch it.

I just saw a video with this monkey being harassed by other monkeys and then running to hug his toy, it was really sad

Yeah, I did too :(((

The monkey has since been adopted by a mother in the enclosure. I was super bummed when I seen that video so I had to look into it a bit. ☺

This could do with a content warning. It’s a distressing read. Extremely so at times.

IDK this is less aww and more depressing IMO... This world can be a cruel and vile place... The poor thing looks miserable.

Colbert had fun making this joke. I'm sure there have been others.

Why can't people see my relationship with my AI girlfriend as cute? I think it's cute.
Glytch@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 183d
This isn't cute. It's tragic. The same applies to your "girlfriend".
Surp@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 183d
It's sad but I'm betting monkeys do what they do for whatever nature reasons they do it.

It's much more likely to occur in zoos.

No this kind of behavior happens in nature as well. First time mothers often reject their baby and then the baby just dies.
mathemachristian@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 183d
It happens yes, but it's more common in zoos.
