They can't sustain themselves with GDP like a modern nation.

My point is laws and technicalities dont make a nation, the nation, or rather the international community of nations, makes the laws and technicalities. The material basis for nationhood isnt abstract like laws, it is concrete like the billion Catholics all over the world who would go fucking goblin mode if their sovereignty was threatened. In that way they're special maybe. They dont have a national identity or rational means of production, but they have global religious devotion, and real estate.
