If they wanted to live, they shouldn't have signed up to kill people for the empire. Instead of following orders, they can refuse them. Yankee nationalists cry about it in the comments.

Because of the late stage capitalism a lot of people sign up just because they're desperate for the social mobility and hope to never have to deploy. A huge reason the US military is able to recruit so successfully is because it's the best social ladder available. These are just flawed desperate people like many others.
