Vonnegut wasn’t the first to make this basic argument. In The Brothers Karamazov there is a novella within the novel called “The Grand Inquisitor” in which Jesus returns during the Inquisition and is executed with the Inquisitor telling him “we don’t need or want you anymore.”
How strange! The Master and Margarita has a ton of asides that amount to a novella that go back to Jesus and pontius pilate, etc too. Another Russian author
