I wonder if he was alive in the photo. You had to be very still for a very long period of time to get your photo taken. That would be especially difficult for living animals.

Photography was instantaneous in the 1890s. The period where it took a long time was decades earlier.

This reminded me of two of my favourite historical dogs; Bummer and Lazarus.
It is a sad story, but immortalised well with even Mark Twain penning a eulogy.
