I'm calling bullshit on this 'stunned' claim. He makes these kinds of off-the-cuff politically blunt comments all the time! If they are really surprised then they have had their head buried in sand for the last decade or two.
America has most of what it needs. It operated in this way before WWII and probably can again. It just won't have the geopolitical might it enjoyed during the Cold War.
