They had a stranglehold on the educational market for a long time. It's why the Apple ||e was produced for so long. I believe their idea was kids get used to Apple products, they're more apt to buy an apple product after school.

That's probably all it needs to be.
The biggest market for Chromebooks is schools, but they're lately finding out that Chromebooks aren't as good a deal as they thought due to the short support window. Apple is probably angling to try and take over that market (and get kids more used to macOS in the process)
